A date has been set for the annual Highland County Sheriff's Office auction, with items confiscated during the course of criminal investigations, as well as real estate properties, going up on the auction block and, for the first time, firearms will also be available for sale.

Hillsboro mayor 'cancels' layoffs

Just days after the 30 days' notice expired for three city employees who were laid off from the city of Hillsboro's administration building, Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink told The Highland County Press Monday that "The layoffs have been canceled" and two of those three employees have been recalled.

The Highland County Firefighters Association has announced the 7th annual Kroger Klassic Car Show. The show will be held July 31 at the Hobart parking lot in Hillsboro. Registration will begin at noon and will end at 2 p.m.

HPD reports: Vehicle strikes wheelchair

The following are reports from the Hillsboro Police Department.
• On July 22, Rick Carter, of Martinsville, Ohio, while driving a 1992 Ford, was traveling on South Elm Street when Neal Strivers, of Walnut Street, Hillsboro, in a motorized wheelchair, cross into South Elm Street from the west alley. This caused the Carter vehicle to allegedly strike the wheelchair and caused Strivers to fall to the roadway., the Hillsboro Police Department said.

Court: Coonrod competent to stand trial on capital murder charges

Wesley Coonrod has been found competent to stand trial on capital murder charges.
Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss told The Highland County Press that the result's of Coonrod's mental evaluation, which had been ordered by the court in June, "Came back that he was competent to stand trial."

A Dodson Township man pleaded guilty Friday in Highland County Common Pleas Court to a bill of information on a charge of sexual conduct with a minor.

A report of road rage leads to discovery of meth lab

A case of alleged road rage resulted in the discovery of a meth lab, according to the Highland County Sheriff's Office.

According to the HCSO, at approximately 8:01 p.m. Thursday, the office received a report of a possible road rage situation on involving a vehicle traveling on U.S. 50 near the community of Allensburg. A deputy on patrol was able to locate the vehicle just west of Hillsboro.

Judge Judkins, commissioners discuss court budget

Highland County commissioners Shane Wilkin, Gary Heaton and Tom Horst discussed budget concerns with Highland County Court/Madison Township Judge Robert Judkins and Clerk Ron Coffey at the July 21 board meeting. After the city of Greenfield’s decision to re-open the jail, Judkins informed commissioners that this would require that the court be open for arraignments for two hours, from 8-10 a.m., on Fridays beginning the first week in August.
