Owensville soldier killed in Afghanistan

Army Spc. Joseph Bauer, 27, of Owensville was killed Saturday, July 24, while on a combat mission in Afghanistan, The Cincinnati Enquirer (http://news.cincinnati.com has reported.
Bauer, a three-year U.S. Army veteran, was on duty as a mine sweeper in Afghanistan he was killed. He had recently re-enlisted.
The Army will fly Bauer’s parents, Roger Bauer of Owensville and Lynn Bauer of Goshen Township, and wife, Misty, to Dover Air Force base in Delaware this week to retrieve his body, the Enquirer said.
Spc. Bauer has a brother, Jason Bauer, 34, serving with the U.s. Navy.
The newspaper said Spc. Bauer's death was the second casualty from the parish of St. Louis Church in Owensville since the war began in 2001.
"Another former member of St. Louis Church, Marine Lance Cpl. Nick Erdy, was killed in Iraq in 2005 at age 21. Cpl. Erdy, son of William and Jane Erdy of Lynchburg, Ohio, was a 2002 graduate of McNicholas High School," the newspaper said.

Bombings killed five U.S. troops in Afghanistan on Saturday, NATO's International Security Assistance Force said. Four service members died in one attack and one was killed in the other.
June was the deadliest month for international troops since the war began: 60 Americans were among 102 international troops killed.
