Three Highland County teens were injured in a crash over the weekend, that left at least one 16-year-old with serious injuries.
  According to the Wilmington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at approximately 5:30 p.m. Sunday, a silver Saturn carrying three 16-year-olds was traveling on Certier Road off state Route 131. The driver overcorrected, causing the vehicle to strike a culvert, and then two trees.

This summer the Ohio General Assembly and governor passed a State operating budget which takes bold steps toward improving Ohio’s already great universities. Historic construction reform, commercialization expansion, and the ability for universities to enter into lease-back agreements were accomplished to help universities realize cost savings.

A Wilmington man has pleaded guilty to engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity and was sentenced to nine years in prison Friday. As a result of the plea, nearly $40,000, and four vehicles were forfeited to Highland County.
 Rodger Cassell pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree felony engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity; one count of possession of drugs, a felony of the third degree; and a forfeiture of property specification.

A trial date has been continued for a man charged with first-degree felonious assault with a firearm, allegedly against a law enforcement officer.
 Justin Stubbs, 33, appeared Friday in Highland County Common Pleas Court before Judge Rocky Coss.

A Hillsboro man has been arrested on a second-degree felony aggravated burglary charge, and another man is still being sought by authorities.
 On Aug. 10 at 9:38 pm the Highland County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a resident in the 10000 block of Careytown Road in Penn Township stating that she awoke and found a male in her house. The male suspect had ran out of the house when he was confronted by the homeowner, and got into the passenger side of a vehicle.

The Highland County Sheriff’s Office has reported that three additional suspects have been arrested as a result of a lengthy undercover investigation involving the possession, distribution and trafficking of Heroin in Highland County.
  On Aug. 3, seven suspects were arrested after a grand jury in Highland County indicted 11 people on 173 counts involved in heroin trafficking. Seven of those individuals were arrested that day, mostly in the Greenfield area.

The state of Ohio will now pay tens of thousands of state workers to reimburse them for personal days they gave up in the past two years.

After approximately nine hours of deliberations, a jury of seven women and five men returned a not guilty verdict for a Hillsboro man who was charged with one count of second-degree felony endangering children.
 Gregory Kiley, 34, was tried over the course of two days in Highland County Common Pleas Court.
 As Clerk of Courts, Ike Hodson, read the verdict aloud Thursday morning, family members of the victim and defendant began crying.

A new Ohio law that modifies the sentencing structure for felony convictions and aims to reduce the number of low- to moderate-level offenders in the state prison system may save the state of Ohio close to $50 million. However, Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss said that aspects of the law may bog down areas of the judicial system and will most likely have an impact on daily court operations.

The Highland County Board of Commissioners discussed the options and process of conducting a performance audit with representatives of the Auditor's Office of the State of Ohio. 

 

Ohio Governor John Kasich has announced an appointment to the Southern State Community College Board of Trustees.
 Larry Anderson, of Adams County, has been appointed to fill one of two vacancies on the board.
 Anderson's term will begin today and will end May 11, 2014.
