Supreme Court to hear four cases during Highland County session in October

Oral arguments will be held before the seven Justices of the Supreme Court at 9 a.m. at the Highland County Courthouse, 105 N. High St., in Hillsboro. Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor will preside and be joined by Justices Paul E. Pfeifer, Evelyn Lundberg Stratton, Terrence O’Donnell, Judith Ann Lanzinger, Robert R. Cupp and Yvette McGee Brown.

Testimony has begun in Highland County Common Pleas Court Monday in the attempted murder trial of Hillsboro resident Jimmie Jacobs, who is accused of shooting Jonathan Harris in the face in December 2010.

County anticipating decision on HCSO contract negotiations; city FOP contract finalized

Union negotiations between employees of the Highland County Sheriff's Office and the Highland County Board of Commissioners may reach an end by the middle of September, while an agreement has already been reached between the city of Hillsboro and the Hillsboro Police Department.

President offers no comments on uncle's OVI charge

Neither President Obama nor his administration have commented about the arrest of Obama's uncle in Massachusetts last week on suspicion of drunken driving. According to WCVB Channel 5 in Boston, Onyango Obama, 67, was arrested last week on an OVI charge.

Hillsboro family gets new home thanks to Habitat for Humanity

The keys have been turned over and a Hillsboro family has a new home thanks to Highland County Habitat for Humanity.
Construction on the project home, located in the 600 block of North West Street in Hillsboro, has been ongoing for just over a year, and new owners Dwayne and Wendy Taylor are getting settled inside their new walls.

The Highland County Bar Association is selling commemorative mugs featuring the Highland County Courthouse and the date of the October Ohio Supreme Court session in order to raise funds for the association-sponsored luncheon for the justices and other participants during the day's hearing.

S.R. 131 closing for weeklong culvert replacement

A culvert replacement project on state Route 131 will force closure of the route for one week next month. S.R. 131 will be closed the week of September 12 while crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Highland County Highway Maintenance Facility replace a deteriorated pipe located at the 4.10-mile marker.

Study: States enrolling more children in CHIP

Thirty states boosted the proportion of eligible kids covered under the federal-state program and the national average moved from 80 percent to nearly 85 percent, according to a new report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Urban Institute. Preliminary U.S. Census data suggests that expansion is continuing, the study says.

Prison spokesperson: Dana Jeter dies 10 days after being sentenced to prison time

The Corrections Reception Center in Orient has confirmed to The Highland County Press that Highland County resident, Dana Jeter, who was sentenced Aug. 17 to serve six years in prison on child pornography charges, has died.

Angela Hill, Public Information Officer and warden's assistant at the CRC, said Jeter died at 2:59 a.m. Saturday at OSU Medical Center in Columbus. He had been transferred to the hospital, she said, after complaining of chest pains. The cause of death was listed as cardiac arrest and is not considered suspicious.
