    Ohio unemployment up slightly to 10.6 percent

    Ohio's unemployment rate was 10.6 percent in November, up slightly from 10.5 percent in October, according to data released Dec. 18 by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Ohio's nonfarm wage and salary employment increased 5,400 over the month, from 5,104,000 in October to 5,109,400 in November. "The number of employed Ohioans rose slightly in November, but not enough to produce a significant change in the unemployment rate," ODJFS Director Douglas Lumpkin said.

    Voinovich warns Medicaid will be costly to states in health reform bill
    As a former governor of Ohio, former chairman of the National Governors Association and past chairman of the National League of Cities, one gimmick I am particularly concerned with is the one that puts 14 million additional individuals into the Medicaid program and then asks the states to pick up a portion of the tab. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) has announced that the Senate passage of more than $35 million in federal funds for Ohio projects that support the research and development of technology for military use.     Winter weather advisory in effect
    A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday for Highland and surrounding counties. Much of the region has received 2-3 inches of snow, with additional accumulations of 1-2 inches possible through Saturday.     Commission hears plan for Leesburg annexation
    The Highland County Board of Commissioners and Frank Leone of Environmental Engineering Services met Wednesday with Leesburg Mayor Jim Cook, Leesburg Solicitor Fred Beery and Leesburg developer Harold Roberts regarding a proposed annexation of property along High Rock Road.
       “We are hoping to do an annexation by agreement,” Beery told commissioners. “This is a meeting to advise you of our wishes. We have to meet with township trustees, too.”

    Former church secretary faces charges
    On December 17, 2009 at 12:30 p.m. Nancy M. Williams, 55, Greenfield, was arrested on an indictment from the Highland County Grand Jury for grand theft and tampering with records.  The charges are the result of an investigation conducted by the Greenfield Police Department and Ohio Attorney General’s Office, and alleges the embezzlement of over $40,000 from St. Benignus Catholic Church, 218 S. Second St., Greenfield, where Williams worked as church secretary from 2004-2009.  Williams was taken to the Highland County Justice Center in lieu of bond and will appear for arraignment in Highland County Common Pleas Court, Hillsboro.

    On December 16, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. the Greenfield Police Department received a report that a green and silver 1997 Ford F-150 pickup truck had been stolen from the parking lot behind the Greenfield VFW Hall, 214 Jefferson St.  The keys had been left in the vehicle according to the owner.
