    SEALs from unit that took down bin Laden among dead in helicopter crash

    KABUL, Afghanistan - U.S. Navy SEALs who belonged to the unit that killed Osama bin Laden are among the 30 U.S. citizens who were killed Saturday when an insurgent shot down a U.S. military helicopter.
     According to The Associated Press, "Insurgents shot down a U.S. military helicopter during fighting in eastern Afghanistan, killing 30 Americans, most of them belonging to the same elite unit as the Navy SEALs who killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, U.S. officials said today. It was the deadliest single loss for American forces in the decade-old war against the Taliban."

    Patton gets 6 years for armed robbery; smiles at victim in court
    A Hillsboro man charged with robbing Larry's Party Shop at knifepoint pleaded guilty to the first-degree felony charge Thursday and was sentenced to six years in prison, but not before turning to the victim and smiling in open court. 
    Casey Patton, 26, was indicted on the charge in June after he had allegedly entered the store on April 20, brandished a knife and demanded cash. 
    In court Thursday, before Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss, as Patton was being seated at the defense table, he turned to a reporter with the Highland County Press and posed and smiled for a photo, before smiling at the victim.

    Dehaas pleads guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide
    After pleading guilty on a charge of aggravated vehicular homicide, the defendant broke down, wiping tears from his face with his tattoo-covered arm, as victims called him a "murderer" and a "coward" who does "Satan's work," and that "God will have vengeance."

    Miller appears on involuntary manslaughter charge
    A Greenfield woman indicted on a charge of involuntary manslaughter following the March death of her infant daughter appeared Wednesday in Highland County Common Pleas Court, where she cried through the hearing, and sobbed loudly as she was led out of the courtroom by her attorney.

    Jeter pleads guilty on child porn charges
    A Hillsboro man has pleaded guilty to two felony charges related to child pornography in Highland County Common Pleas Court.
     Dana Jeter, 52, of Hillsboro, entered guilty pleas on counts one and two of a 17-count indictment Wednesday. As part of the plea agreement, the remaining 15 counts were dismissed.

    A corrections officer with the Highland County Sheriff's Office was arraigned Wednesday on a fourth-degree misdemeanor charge of menacing in Hillsboro Municipal Court, where he pleaded not guilty.

    Former U.S. Congressman Clarence E. Miller, a longtime Ohio Republican lawmaker, has died. Congressman Miller died on Aug. 2 in a Lancaster, Ohio hospital. He was 93.

    11 indicted on corrupt activity drug charges WATCH THE VIDEO

    Eleven individuals, along with real estate and bank accounts, were indicted on 173 counts by a grand jury in Highland County Common Pleas Court in a continuing investigation into patterns of corrupt activity involving a drug pipeline law enforcement says is responsible for bringing heroin into Highland County via Greenfield. 

    The corrupt activity charges are "intertwined" with cases against nine individuals who were arrested in April in the Greenfield area on similar charges, according to Highland County Sheriff Ron Ward.

    1,354 signatures collected protesting Greenfield water bill/trash collection combination
    Greenfield residents presented the Greenfield council and administration with a petition Tuesday saying they do not want the village to pursue efforts to combine trash collection with their waters bills.
     During council's regular meeting Tuesday, Greenfield resident Bonnie Clyburn addressed council, as she and Becky Grove and Erica Kelly, presented a petition with 1,354 signatures.

    Portman, Brown vote in favor of bill to raise debt ceiling
    Following the U.S. House of Representatives' passage Monday of a compromise bill to raise the federal debt ceiling, the Senate has approved the measure in a 74-26 vote Tuesday. Both of Ohio's U.S. senators, Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman, voted in favor of the bill.
