A Greenfield woman indicted on a charge of involuntary manslaughter following the March death of her infant daughter appeared Wednesday in Highland County Common Pleas Court, where she cried through the hearing, and sobbed loudly as she was led out of the courtroom by her attorney.
Jessica Miller appeared for a pretrial hearing before Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss. She had been scheduled for trial Aug. 11.
Miller's daughter, 10-month-old Camry Lyn Calhoun, died at her residence in the 100 block of South Washington Street in Greenfield on March 21. Deputy Highland County Coroner Dr. Jeff Beery ruled "the cause of death to be drowning and the manner of death is an accident."
She was indicted in June on one charge of involuntary manslaughter and one charge of child endangering.
Miller's attorney, Lee Koogler, said that he had another individual he needed to interview before the case could move forward, and he asked Coss for a continuance.
Coss set a new trial date for Aug. 22, with a pretrial Aug. 17, and a potential alternative trial date for Sept. 15.
Koogler noted that Miller, who appeared in the custody of the Highland County Sheriff's Office, had been in jail for 57 days.
The only time Miller spoke during the hearing was when Coss asked her if she was Jessica Miller. Her voice cracked when she said, "Yes." She sat at the defense table silently crying throughout the hearing, but when Coss dismissed her, she began crying loudly, and Koogler led her out the courtroom.
