February is Heart Health Month, a time to learn more about heart disease and how to keep your heart healthy. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of illness and death in the United States. It can lead to serious problems like heart attacks and strokes, but many heart problems can be prevented. 

George Spickard was born 1757 in Virginia. He enlisted in Capt. Richard Campbell’s Co. 8th Virginia Regiment in 1776. He served until Feb. 9, 1781 and was discharged at Valley Forge. He was in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown. 

The Highland County Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit membership-driven organization that represents the business community of Highland County. The Chamber hosts four main events throughout the year along with quarterly networking and educational events.

Hugh Evans, a Revolutionary War soldier, was born near Hagerstown, Md., on October 7, 1730, the son of Samuel Evans, a native of Wales. 

Punxsutawney Phil is said to be predicting six more weeks of wintry weather after he saw his shadow Monday, Feb. 2.

The Highland County Retired Teachers’ Association (HCRTA) will hold its regular winter meeting on Monday, Feb. 9, at the Hillsboro Church of Christ’s Fellowship Hall.  

Dempsey Capp filed for his pension in Highland County on the 25th of April 1825.

The Lynchburg Lions Club held its regular dinner meeting Jan. 19 at the Lions Club building in Lynchburg. The club heard presentations from District Gov. Rachelle Powers, First District Gov. Ben Dunn and Second Vice District Gov. Tony Winner. 

On Tuesday, Jan. 20, state Senator Shane Wilkin, R-Hillsboro, was the guest speaker at the Hillsboro Rotary Club luncheon. 

Charles White applied for his pension on Oct. 28, 1833 at the age of 70 in Highland County. At that time, he stated that he was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia on Sept. 5, 1763 (tombstone inscription states 1761).
