The McClain Lady Tigers gained a season sweep against cross-county rival Hillsboro Friday night, as they defeated the Lady Indians 61-21 in their first meeting at the new Hillsboro High School gym.

Tom Brokaw U.S. Route 50 documentary airs Monday, Jan. 18
The Tom Brokaw U.S. Route 50 final documentary will air at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18 on the USA Network. Earlier this year, the film crews visited Highland County and taped a story of Dan and April Looper and their struggles raising four children in the wake of the DHL departure and the ongoing recession.

As much as I hate to admit it, I am getting older. Besides some of the obvious concessions to age, one of the obvious changes in attitudes that I have as I have grown older is my negative opinion of winter. I don’t believe that too many people like the bitter cold temperatures that we have been experiencing this month and the resulting problems, such as vehicles and tractors not starting, frozen water pipes, and high heating bills. I also fully understand why those folks who have the ability to relocate south for the winter do so.
WCH turns program over to Shaffer in '68
In July 1968, Washington Court House City Schools announced that a new basketball coach had been employed; 24-year-old Gary Shaffer, of Wellsburg, W.Va., replaced Jim Wilson, who retired. Shaffer had played three years of varsity basketball at West Virginia University and had coached one year at Easton, Md., where his team won the class B state championship, with a 23- 0 record. He was married and had a 14 month-old son.
What happened to the Cowboys?
With five high schools in the county, I often wonder about each school’s nickname and think about how they got the nickname. In Highland County we have the Indians, Mustangs, Tigers, Lions and Wildcats. Highland County has a nice mixture of cats, horses and a celebrated group of people.
Donation made to Farmers and Hunters Feeding Hunger
The Highland County Chapter of Whitetails Unlimited recently donated money to the farmers and hunters feeding hunger program to pay processing for donated deer.
