  • Jury seated in Coonrod trial

    Just after the noon hour, a jury of seven women and five men, along with three alternates, was seated in the second trial on capital murder charges for Wesley Coonrod.
  • Jury selection begins in second Coonrod trial
    CIRCLEVILLE - Jury selection was scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Monday in the retrial of Wesley Coonrod, on charges of murder.
     Coonrod, 42, of Greenfield, was found guilty in October of two counts of felony endangering children. He had faced aggravated murder charges with death penalty specifications stemming from a March fire in his apartment on Lafayette Street in Greenfield, during which his sons Thomas, 4, and Stephen, 3, were killed.
  • Common pleas court summary shows first decrease in foreclosures in seven years
    The General Divisions of the Highland County Court of Common Pleas has released its 2010 case summary, which shows a 41 percent reduction in the number of pending cases the court has seen since 2008. While the court has seen a decrease in the number of criminal cases filed, the statistics show the court saw its first decrease in the number of foreclosures since 2003, but a 96-percent increase in all other civil cases over the past seven years.

    The city of Greenfield and four other defendants named in a complaint filed by former city law director Conrad Curren have filed a response, denying they conspired against current to terminate his employment, and that they are immune from punitive damages.

  • Hastings takes out petitions to run for mayor
    After spending years revitalizing structures in the Uptown Hillsboro area, Drew Hastings has taken out petitions to run for the office of the mayor of Hillsboro.
     Hastings told The Highland County Press that he took out petitions with the Highland County Board of Elections Office, and that he plans to run as a Republican.
  • School board completes self-assessment
    The Hillsboro City Schools Board of Education filled out a self-assessment from the Ohio School Board Association during a meeting held Wednesday at Hillsboro High School.
     The A-Z assessment allows the school boards to measure ares in which have made improvement, and areas that still need work.

  • Hillsboro man arrested on child porn charge
    A Hillsboro man has been arrested on charges related to the possession and dissemination of child pornography.
     According to the Highland County Sheriff's Office Dana P. Jeter, 52, was arrested Tuesday and charged with one count of illegal use of a minor in nudity oriented material, a felony of the second degree.
     On Tuesday, Jan. 18, detectives and deputies with the HCSO, along with Agents from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI&I) executed a search warrant at a Hillsboro residence in response to an ongoing investigation into alleged child pornography possession, according to the sheriff's office. Upon execution of the warrant, items of evidence were seized and taken to the crime lab at BCI&I for further analysis.
  • Council developing public perception survey
    The zoning and annexation community of the Hillsboro City Council examined selling a portion of city property off Moore Road, while the community enhancement committee discussed conducting a survey regarding the perception of decisions being made by city officials during meetings held Tuesday. 
  • Council members at odds over temporary sign ordinance
    The property maintenance and restoration committee discussed the rewriting of the temporary sign ordinance and considered the inclusions of fines for businesses who leave temporary signs up for more than 30 days.
