The Highland County Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting at 9 a.m. Monday, June 6 in the commissioners' office.

Longtime Bainbridge historian June Gregg, who will be celebrating her 100th birthday with family and friends at an open house on Saturday, June 4, is still using a bank savings account that was opened in 1913.

Some Ohio schools and local governments could receive fewer funding cuts under Senate-proposed budget changes that total $130 million, although it is unlikely Highland County will be heavily affected.   
 The proposed changes of the 4,800-page document were released May 31 and must be finalized by June 30, prior to the start of the state's fiscal year on July 1.

A multi-vehicle crash occurred in an Ohio Department of Transportation work zone on state Route 124 Wednesday morning, although no ODOT workers or vehicles were involved. One person was transported to Highland District Hospital.
  The Wilmington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said that the trooper investigating the crash was continuing investigation at the hospital and could not immediately be reached for further information.

WLW radio host, attorney and Highland County Press columnist Eric Deters has apologized for comments that he says were "a joke he took too far."

"In the past five years alone, our national debt has increased $4.8 trillion, or 15 percent per year. Nearly a third of that debt was accumulated in the past three years and can be directly attributed to deficit spending and the unsustainable growth of our entitlement programs."

Congressman Mike Turner has announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Public and Indian Housing Self-Sufficiency Program has awarded a $65,000 grant to the Dayton Metropolitan Housing Authority. The funds will aid low income families as they seek to gain financial independence and purchase their own home.

“At a time when our nation’s unemployment remains stubbornly high, the Administration should be working to level the playing field for American workers, farmers and businesses, including taking stronger measures to stop China currency manipulation which unfairly increases the cost of our exports to China and decreases the costs of their exports to the United States,” Sen. Portman said.

In 2010, approximately 31 different black bears were confirmed in the Buckeye State according to the ODNR Division of Wildlife. While the population of Ohio’s largest mammal, a state endangered species, may not exactly increase in 2011, sightings of the burly creatures are expected to rise in the summer months.

Members of VFW Post 9094 and the Highland County Board of Commissioners broke ground Monday for the new veterans memorial on the lawn of the Highland County Courthouse.
  Commissioner Tom Horst welcomed the crowd of people to the groundbreaking, located on the southwest corner of the property. when completed, the memorial will face East Main Street.
