The Ohio House Commerce and Labor Committee has voted, 9-6, in support of a bill that would limit collective bargaining rights for 350,000 state public workers.

The Wilmington post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on March 25 at approximately 10 p.m. on state Route 73 near milepost #21 in Green Township, Clinton County.

Highland County posted the 9th-highest unemployment rate in the state for February at 14.4 percent. Highland County was ranked with the seventh highest rate in the state at 15.3 percent in January.

Leaders in seven area townships say they were surprised to receive notice from the city of Hillsboro that their EMS services will be canceled as of June 30, despite having a signed contract that stated the city would provide the services to the end of 2011. Members of the Hillsboro City Council were also surprised of the notice given to the townships, and say they had no prior knowledge of the action.

A statewide severe weather drill will take place Wednesday, March 23 at 9:50 a.m. The drill is held during Severe Weather Awareness Week, as declared by Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

The Highland County Victim Witness Program will hold its second annual Victims’ Rights Candlelight Vigil on Tuesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. on the lawn of the Highland
County Courthouse. Also, they will be meeting with the county commissioners on Wednesday, April 6 at 9 a.m. for a proclamation.

Ohio Auditor of State Dave Yost wants Ohio’s public offices to be more accountable when fulfilling public records requests and will begin monitoring compliance during regular audits. Auditor Yost announced his plans at a press conference this week at the Statehouse in connection with national “Sunshine Week.”
