Dear Editor:

On behalf of the Highland County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, I would like to express my support for State Issue 2, which would create the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board. The Board is a common-sense approach to setting standards governing the well-being of livestock and poultry in Ohio and will ensure thousands of Ohio farmers are able to remain in business and protect our state's number one economic contributor - agriculture.

Stopped at the light at High and Main, on the way to the grocery store, I noted that every single driver going through the intersection, was using a cell phone. At the store, I observed a woman in one aisle talking into a cell phone while yanking down items from the shelf. Later, she was ahead of me in the check-out line, still talking and paying no attention to the cashier. I saw her wheel out her cart, load the items in her minivan, get in and drive off, continuously talking into her phone.

On Sept. 5, 2009 my husband and I heard chain saws, close chain saws. This tree removal service was on our property on Spargur Lane cutting down our trees. They told us they were cutting and clearing for the Paint Township trustees. We asked them to stop while we frantically tried to reach the trustees. They refused.  That day by quitting time, they had cut 50 trees from our road frontage and hauled away our wood. This was all done without our permission or any discussion. My husband told them it was our wood and we wanted it but to no avail.

Dear Editor:

  Does it matter who is elected in the Nov. 3 school board election? Absolutely! These individuals will make decisions affecting the quality of life in our communities, the education of our children and grandchildren, and the spending of our tax dollars. School board members set the direction for public education for our state and nation.

Thank you for your consideration on the Rocky Fork Lake request. We are, of course, very disappointed that the request was denied. Highland County now has the second highest unemployment rate in the state and it seems to us we are sent conflicting signals from our state government. One hand tells us to be pro-active in development of jobs for our unemployed. The other hand erects obstacles to reach our goal. The situation is becoming increasingly more difficult to explain to our residents.
