Greenfield man thanks his rescuers

To the editor:
This is December again, and that brings back memories of Dec. 2007, two years ago.
We had dug a pit on the side of our water well to keep our water pump and pressure tank in so they wouldn't freeze in the winter time, and I had a gasoline engine hooked up to the water pump (just temporarily) inside the pit.
On a Monday morning, the first day of deer gun season and a rainy morning, I was in the pit working with the engine and pump, priming the pump, etc. to get water pumped and the door on top of the pit was open. I remember going up for fresh air as I felt it a little in my breathing but not seriously on account of exhaust fumes, so I stopped the engine and primed the pump yet before coming out.
Then, around 45 minutes later, I was found unconscious by my wife, and she went for help right away.
The Life Support was called out of Greenfield and arrived soon. They gave me oxygen and revived me. The first thing I remember was they had a hold of me and were telling me to take steps on the stepladder to get out of the pit, and as you can determine, I was overcome with carbon monoxide fumes.
It appears I was just ready to come out when it hit me, instantly -- I'm lucky that the engine was no longer going and that I was found and revived in time, or I probably wouldn't be here anymore to write this. I want to take this way to thank the Greenfield Life Support, who came out here and revived me. They didn't charge me a cent. It is worth a lot more than words can tell to live in a community like this!
God bless you,
Moses R. Coblentz
