Local Ohio State University Extension supporters are working hard to keep the 4-H youth development, agriculture/natural recourses and family consumer sciences programs alive for the coming years. In an effort to raise money for the Ohio State University Extension of Highland County, including the 4-H program, Jerry Haag Motors is hosting a test-drive event on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Payroll corrections for Highland County elected officials will be made this week, Highland County Commissioner Tom Horst said at the Wednesday, Oct. 27 commission meeting.

In an effort to increase the capacity within the county's non-profit organizations, the Highland County Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring an all-day workshop, "Back to Basics - Make Your Non-Profit Stronger," on Friday, Nov. 12.

After a little over a year of being in service, the Village of Highland would like to thank the following businesses and individuals for their donations of equipment, materials, services, money, or time that went toward providing the village law enforcement with equipment. The Village of Highland had been without its own law enforcement for approximately nine years until 2009.

Based on new passenger rail ridership figures from Amtrak, a review by the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Ohio Rail Development Commission shows that the demand for transportation choice is on the rise, with 14 percent more Ohioans riding passenger trains over the past year, according to a news release from ODOT's Scott Varner today.

Everyday workers will articulate their hopes, dreams and fears when Wilmington College Theatre presents the musical "Working," Nov. 18, 19 and 20, at 7:30 p.m., in Hugh G. Heiland Theatre.

Heartland of Hillsboro will celebrate the completion of its newly renovated TCU Unit on Wednesday, Oct. 27 from 2-4 p.m.

Ohio's unemployment rate was 10.0 percent in September, down from 10.1 percent in August, according to data released Oct. 22 by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS). Ohio's nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased 17,300 over the month, from the revised 5,031,500 in August to 5,014,200 in September.

The Hillsboro Post Office is providing free postage on any flat-rate parcel mailed to any military personnel currently serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, effective Nov. 1-30, 2010, for Highland County residents.

The City of Hillsboro Water Department will be conducting its annual hydrant flushing starting Monday, Oct. 25 through Friday, Oct. 29, 2010.
