The Highland County District Library and the African-American Awareness Research Council hosted the 2012 Black History Month program Feb. 18, honoring the Rev. Hurd Latimer and the late Charles E. Cole.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) has launched a new web-based tool that will make it easier to track whether recipients of Ohio Works First cash assistance are meeting their work requirements.

Voters First Ohio has introduced a statewide ballot initiative that would establish the Ohio Independent Redistricting Commission, beginning with the 2014 election. Voters First Ohio is a coalition led by the League of Women Voters of Ohio, with partners Common Cause/Ohio, ProgressOhio and other "dedicated Ohioans."

Ohio lawmaker Cliff Rosenberger is seeking the appointment to the recently vacated 17th Senate District seat in the Ohio General Assembly. Rosenberger, a Clarksville Republican, is currently serving his first term at the Ohio House of Representatives. He represents the 86th House District, which includes Clinton, Highland and Pike counties.

The former superintendent of the Highland County Board of Developmental Disabilities has filed a lawsuit against the board and Hills and Dales Training Center in Highland County Common Pleas Court, asking for a jury trial, and that he be awarded more than $25,000 in damages. He also claims that he is “entitled to reinstatement to his position as superintendent for at least one additional year.”

According to Elsie Johnson Ayres ("Hills of Highland," 1971), 1895 was a noteworthy year for Hillsboro. Aside from the construction of the opera house, the old Presbyterian Church was razed and the cornerstone for the new church, which still stands on the site today, was laid. The trustees took possession of the new waterworks plant, and the Columbus and Maysville Railroad suspended operation, only to resume again 17 days later.

Danny Roberts has opened the Mowrystown Chop Shop, the village's first privately owned barber shop in many years. The shop is located in the post office building at 2B West Main Street in Mowrystown.

Mr. Vanzant served the city of Hillsboro for several years, beginning in 1996, as safety and service director in former Mayor Sandy Harsha's administration. He served in a similar capacity for the city of Greenfield.

The Lynchburg-Clay Athletic Boosters announces its eighth annual 300 Club dinner will be held on Saturday, April 14 at 5:30 p.m. As in past years, all proceeds will be used to make improvements and additions to the Outdoor Athletic Complex.

Following an undercover investigation by the Hillsboro Police Department, a Wilmington man is facing a number of charges.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife has announced that 219,698 deer were taken during Ohio's 2011-12 hunting season, compared to 239,379 in the 2010-11 season. The top three counties with the highest number of deer taken this season were: Coshocton, Licking and Tuscarawas.

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted has sent a letter to United States Attorney General Eric Holder seeking a meeting to resolve the inability of states such as Ohio to maintain accurate voter rolls due to inconsistent sections of federal law.
