Bright idea was doggone funny

Conventional wisdom suggests that owning one’s own newspaper might be best left to the professionals. After all, as Baltimore’s second-most famous journalist, H.L. Mencken, said “A newspaper is a device for making the ignorant more ignorant and the
crazy crazier.” Then again, no one’s ever accused me of being conventional – or wise.

Extension asks for .45-mill levy
After delaying an initial request for a .4-mill tax levy for the Ohio State University/Highland County Extension last week, the Highland County Board of Commissioners approved a .45-mill levy for the agency for the May 4 primary election. Commissioners had agreed to hold off on an initial resolution after Extension Director Rose Fisher Merkowitz said the .4-mill levy wouldn't raise sufficient funds. On Wednesday, commissioners voted 2-0 in favor of sending the .45-mill levy to voters.

St. Mary Catholic School celebrates 10th anniversary
St. Mary Catholic School is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and its pupils and staff are commemorating the beginning of this landmark year by recognizing Catholic Schools Week. Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink visited St. Mary's on Jan. 21 to present the school with a proclamation for Catholic Schools Week

Judge addresses concern over bond signing
A new standing procedural order regarding the release of prisoners has been placed in the Highland County Clerk of Courts Office, following an incident on Saturday, Jan. 16. An inmate at the Highland County Justice Center was released after an own recognizance bond was signed by Highland County Clerk of Courts Paulette Donley, rather than by a judge, prompting Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss to issue the standing order.

The balance of power in the South Central Ohio League shifted from Fayette County to Highland County Thursday night as the McClain Lady Tigers played their brand of basketball and gained the SCOL victory over the Miami Trace Lady Panthers 54-49 at McClain High School.

McClain senior Kate Hammond scored her 1,000th point Thursday night at McClain High School against South Central Ohio League rival Miami Trace.

Retired judge and McClain graduate to be guest at Black History program
James F. Cannon will be the guest of honor at the Black History Month program at the Highland County District Library in February.  Mr. Cannon, a 1949 graduate of McClain High School, went on to serve in the U. S. Air Force for 20 years.  After retiring from the Air Force, he studied at Wright State University, receiving both a bachelor's and a master's degree.
