Lebanon OSHP Post investigating a minor injury Norfolk Southern train derailment in Franklin
LEBANON – On April 9 at approximately 10:41 a.m., troopers from the Lebanon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to assist and investigate a train derailment. The train derailment occurred at 675 Oxford Road, near the Atlas Roofing rail yard in Franklin, Warren County.
The preliminary investigation revealed a Norfolk Southern local train was traveling northwest on Norfolk Southern Railway from the Atlas Roofing rail yard. The train derailed near Forest Avenue and Chestnut Street. As a result of the derailment, three of the five total rail cars derailed; two cars suspended and one car, the locomotive,
overturned.
As a result of the locomotive overturning, diesel fuel leaked. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was notified and responded. One of the two rail cars that did not derail was fully loaded with argon. The area remains temporarily closed to all traffic while crews assess the scene and begin recovery efforts.
The train was occupied by three individuals at the time of the derailment. All three individuals were transported by ground ambulance to Atrium Medical Center with minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lebanon Post and the Federal Railroad Administration.
The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Franklin Police Department, Franklin Fire Department & EMS, Ohio EPA, Norfolk Southern, Ohio Department of Transportation, Duke Energy, and Sandy’s Towing.
