1925 was a dynamic year in American history. Astronomer Edwin Hubble showed there were galaxies beyond the Milky Way. Calvin Coolidge was the first president to have his inauguration broadcast on radio. F. Scott Fitzgerald published "The Great Gatsby," the Scopes "Monkey" Trial in Tennessee gave attention to the debate between science and religion and the Grand Ole Opry began broadcasting on radio.

And 100 years ago on Oct. 28, 1925 the world greeted Howard Thomas (Tom) Boyle of Hillsboro, Ohio by way of Boyle County, Ireland.

Living now in Waynesville with his 96-year-old wife of 75 years and in the care of his eldest daughter Carol Gustin, Tom spends his days cheering on his Reds, Buckeyes and Bengals.

Tom Boyle is a World War Il Navy veteran who served as an engine mechanic for the U.S. fleet of war ships. His time was spent in Norfolk, Va. and New Orlean, La. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1943 and volunteered at 18 that same year.

Marrying Jeanne in 1950, they gave birth to four children over the next decade. Michael in 1952, Carol in ‘54, Ellen in ‘57 and their late son Kevin in ‘61. When Michael’s friend Tom Rudisill lost his parent at 18, the Boyle family took him in to become the seventh member.

Tom and Jeanne were married at the New Antioch Church of Christ. Tom worked for Federal Land Bank for years and retired from the Highland County Water Board after 37 years of service, many of those years as president.

Tom is known for his toughness and loyalty as well as his Christian faithfulness and his sense of humor.
He attends Crossview Christian Church.

A birthday celebration for Tom is going to be held at the Leesburg Church of Christ on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 2-4 p.m. His family would like to thank him for his service to God and country and his love for and loyalty to all of his family.

Happy 100th birthday, Tom!
