  • Hospice of Hope to host 2010 HFA Grief Teleconference, March 24

    On Wednesday, March 24, 2009, from 1:30-4:30 p.m., Hospice of Hope will serve as the host site for Hospice Foundation of America's 17th Annual National Bereavement Teleconference,  "Living With Grief: Cancer and End-of-Life Care."
  • Army Pfc. Mineer returns to Fort Richardson
    Army Pfc. Adam K. Mineer has returned to Fort Richardson, Anchorage, Alaska after being deployed to Afghanistan for one year.  The soldier is one of 3,500 members of the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division stationed at Fort Richardson.  Airborne combat team members included soldiers assigned to one of six battalions and regiments of the 25th Infantry Division.
  • Documentary on polio debuts on HBO April 1
    The Final Inch, a 38-minute film that chronicles the challenges health organizations and governments face during the final stages of polio eradication, will air on HBO on 1 April at 8 p.m. The Hillsboro Rotary club recently conducted a local Polio Awareness campaign. The club would like to thank everyone who participated in the campaign. Over $128 in spare change was raised. The proceeds will be divided equally between Rotary's End Polio Now campaign and the local Society for Children and Adults.
  • March 30 is National Doctor's Day
    On Tuesday, March 30, Adena Health System along with healthcare organizations across the nation will observe National Doctor’s Day, a time set aside each year to thank physicians for the many contributions they bring to our local communities.
  • Support for caregivers and grandparents raising grandchildren available through Area Agency on Aging
    Through funding from the Older Americans Act, AAA7 provides a Caregiver Support Program that is designed to provide caregivers with services that can help reduce stress, in addition to resources that can aid with providing better care for not only the loved one, but the individual caregiver as well.
  • Big Brothers/Big Sisters hosts Bowl for Kids' Sake
    Bowl for Kids' Sake, sponsored by Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association, is held from March to May each year. The Community Day Bowlers participate on special days during March, April and May. There are five Community Day events; one in Chillicothe, Circleville, Washington Court House, Portsmouth and in Hillsboro.

    The signs are all around us that spring is – officially – here.
        Sports fans know the true signs of spring: baseball spring training and the college basketball tournament. I’m not sure that this is an official sign of spring, but daylight saving time has arrived as well.
  • Center hosts Spring Flea Market March 27
    Annual Spring Flea Market
        The Highland County Senior Center will hold its annual Spring Flea Market on Saturday, March 27 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. All kinds of items will be on sale, including antiques and collectibles, clothes, books, tools, toys, jewelry, glassware, decorations, house wares, seasonal items and more.  A delicious highlight will be our handmade Easter candy, back this year by popular demand. Lunch will be available 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., featuring our famous steak sandwiches, assorted soups, salads and sides and homemade desserts. Call the center at 393-4745 for information.
  • Lions Club brings district convention to Patriot Center
    Hillsboro will play host to the annual South Central District convention of Lions Club International April 23-24. Convention co-chair Jim Georges said Hillsboro has hosted the event at least three times in the past 15 to 20 years.
  • Magic Waters Theatre to hold auditions
    Magic Waters Theatre has announced the dates for their 2010 auditions--April 17 & 18, from 1-5 p.m. There is no need to attend both days (either one is just fine). Although they cast some extremely experienced actors, total novices to the stage are also welcome to try out. The try-outs will be held on their stage on Cave Road, weather permitting. Should it be raining, they will be moved to the producers' home on the same road. (Signs will be posted.)
  • New Directions to hold open house
    New Directions will be hosting an open house for the public to showcase their new building at 251 Jefferson St., Greenfield, on Sunday, March 21 from 3-6 p.m.

  • OSU aquaculture center to host Perch Workshop
    Aquaculture farmers interested in yellow perch production techniques have the opportunity to attend an Ohio State University perch workshop on April 10.
  • Emblem Club holds March meeting
    The Hillsboro Emblem Club met on Tuesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. at the Hillsboro Elks Lodge.  Reports were read and approved.  An article was read by the Americanism Chairman on Black History Month for the February meeting that was cancelled due to the weather.
  • SSCC Theatre holding auditions April 7
    Auditions for the spring one-act play “Man Woman Flower” will be held 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, in the Edward K. Daniels Auditorium on Southern State Community College’s Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro. “Man Woman Flower” will take the stage 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 2.
  • Pork Council Banquet scheduled
    It's official: “March Madness” is upon us.  No, I am not describing the general mood of farmers that are frustrated with the amount of mud that they have to deal with on their properties these days.  Of course, I am referring to the college basketball tournament that will name a new national champion.
