Each year in commemoration of Veterans Day, staff and students throughout the Greenfield Exempted Village School District honor veterans through a number of activities, which include an assembly, performances, and art.
On Tuesday Nov. 11, McClain High School and Greenfield Middle School will celebrate Veterans Day with an assembly and a program for veterans in the new gym.
The program is put together by the McClain Cadet Corps and will include a special speaker, retired USAF SMSgt. John Bratcher. Bratcher’s military service spanned more than two decades and included support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, membership in different honor guards, and special duty assignments across the country, including four years serving in Washington, D.C.
Veterans and their guests will be treated to a light breakfast before the 9 a.m. program in the new gym at McClain High School.
At Buckskin and Rainsboro elementaries, there will be programs for veterans and their families, all performed by the fifth graders and led by music teacher Victoria Mikkelsen.
Buckskin's program will be on Nov. 13. The fifth-graders will perform at 2:45 p.m. for the school, veterans and their guests. Students will perform again that day at 7 p.m. for their parents and veterans.
Rainsboro’s programs will be held on Nov. 18. Prior to the 1 p.m. program performed by fifth grade students, veterans and their guests will be served lunch. The students will again perform at 7 p.m. that evening for their parents and veterans who wish to attend.
Students at Greenfield Elementary have been hard at work creating pictures, some with written messages, for veterans that will be delivered to a veterans home. Also, on Veterans Day each classroom will be learning about the importance of the holiday through various activities.
In the middle school, the white table, which is set to honor missing soldiers, is displayed in the hallway on the first floor outside the office. Student-made posters are hung, as well, and this year, students wrote letters to soldiers in Kuwait.
“It is important to our district that veterans receive gratitude and respect for the sacrifices they have made,” Superintendent Quincey Gray said. “We look forward to being able to invite veterans into our buildings so that we can show our appreciation.”
