Ohio environmentalists are urging a judge to halt a state commission preparing to award leases to oil and gas companies who want to frack beneath state parks and other public land. The Ohio Oil and Gas Land Management Commission is set to meet Monday to consider bids for several parcels of land. Once the commission settles on the “highest and best” bidder, state law requires the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to lease them the parcel.

The 2024-25 Ohio hunting and trapping season dates for white-tailed deer, waterfowl and other migratory game birds, furbearers, small game, and additional species were proposed to the Ohio Wildlife Council on Wednesday, Feb. 7, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The Division of Wildlife proposed removing the trumpeter swan from the state’s threatened species list.

The 375 acres of land in Logan — etched in the rolling hills of Hocking and Vinton counties — is now permanently protected.

The final total represents all deer taken during archery, gun, muzzleloader and youth seasons since Sept. 9, 2023.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife stocked 40.8 million fish of 11 species in Ohio waters in 2023. Fish were stocked during spring, summer and fall at 239 locations statewide. These annual fish stockings play an important role in providing excellent fishing for Ohio’s 1.7 million anglers.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Mineral Resources Management (MRM) will eliminate potential hazards and offer new safe spaces for recreation and tourism in six Ohio communities through funding from the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization Program (AMLER). The projects are pending preliminary eligibility approval from the U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE).

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife recently completed a purchase of 844 acres adjacent to Simco Wildlife Area in Coshocton County. The acquisition will double the size of Simco Wildlife Area, bringing its total acreage to 1,688.

Hunters checked 12,712 white-tailed deer during Ohio’s four-day muzzleloader season that concluded on Tuesday, Jan. 9, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. This total accounts for all deer taken with muzzleloader and archery equipment between Jan. 6-9.
