Softball Report: Lady Mustangs, Fairfield earn wins; McClain, Whiteoak each fall in conference games

The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs were able to fend off a hard-charging North Adams Lady Green Devils team on Tuesday (April 1), as they defeated their Southern Hills Athletic Conference counterpart by an 8-7 score at LCHS.

The Lady Green Devils scored first with a run in the first inning, and it wasn’t until the bottom of the fourth when LCHS took the lead with four runs crossing the plate.

Lynchburg-Clay (6-1) added six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 8-3 lead. North Adams answered with two runs in the top of the sixth and then added four runs in the top of the seventh, but came up one run short.

In all for the Lady Mustangs, they totaled 10 hits and committed six errors, while NAHS had six hits and no errors.

Noel Barnhill finished the game at 2-for-3 with two home runs, two runs and four RBI. Barnhill was also the winning pitcher with another stellar outing, pitching seven innings, allowing seven runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk. Barnhill struck out 15 batters in the SHAC win. Barnhill finished with 115 pitches, 89 for strikes.

Aubrey Roberts was 2-for-3 with a double, one run and a steal. Teammate Reese Ruble was 2-for-3 with one run and two steals.

Jazmine Brown finished 1-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBI. Also for LCHS, Sophia Michael ended the game at 1-for-3 with a double and one run. Avery Blankenship finished 1-for-2. Kami Collins ended at 1-for-3, as she hit a double and had a steal. Caitlyn Collins finished with one run, one RBI and a steal.

Whiteoak loses conference game to Manchester

The Whiteoak Lady Wildcats struggled in their home Southern Hills Athletic Conference game on Tuesday (April 1), falling to the visiting Manchester Lady Greyhounds 21-2.

Manchester scored one run in each of the first two innings, then had a three-run third, four-run fourth and nine-run fifth inning. Whiteoak scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

For the game, Manchester had 16 hits and no errors, while WHS (0-4) had three hits and committed two errors.

Madison Davidson for WHS was 1-for-2 with one run. Elly McMullen went 1-for-2 with a run, and Addy Hauke was 1-for-2. Charli Hauke had one walk and one RBI, and Kylee Ruark forced a walk and had one steal. Kylee Hamm forced two walks, while Oakley Engle had one RBI and a walk. Lily Leston also forced a walk.

Engle pitched 1.2 innings, having one strikeout, and Leston pitched 3.1 innings with two strikeouts.

McClain loses road FAC game to Jackson

On Tuesday (April 1), the McClain Lady Tigers lost their Frontier Athletic Conference game to the host Jackson Ironladies by a 10-0 score.

Jackson in the six-inning game scored three runs in the first, two runs in the second, three runs in the fourth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. For the game, JHS totaled 11 hits and committed one error. McClain totaled three hits and committed two errors.

Hits for McClain included Lindsey Hutchinson going 1-for-3, Hayley Worthen going 1-for-1 and Milla Everetts was 1-for-2. Brie Cummins forced two walks.

Worthen pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three earned runs as she totaled one strikeout. Kyndee Williams pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits and four walks.

The loss moves MHS to a 2-2 overall record.

Lady Lions top Peebles for SHAC win

The Fairfield Lady Lions earned a hard-fought Southern Hills Athletic Conference win on Tuesday (April 1) by fending off the Peebles Lady Indians at PHS by an 8-6 score.

Fairfield (4-1) led 1-0 after scoring a run on the top of the second and lost the lead with Peebles scoring two runs in the bottom of the third. Fairfield regained the lead with a four-run top of the fourth inning, then they added three runs in the top of the seventh for an 8-2 advantage. Peebles scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh for the final 8-6 score.

The game saw Fairfield total nine hits and she committed four errors. Peebles finished with seven hits and committed six errors.

Kelsie Crowder finished 3-for-3 with two runs for the Lady Lions. Whitlee Morrow was 2-for-3 with a run, one RBI and one of her hits was a double. Also with two hits was Carly Sanders at 2-for-4 with three runs and one RBI, and like her teammate, she also hit a double.

Jobey Hattan ended the game at 1-for-4 with a run, and Jorgia Smith went 1-for-3 with one RBI and a walk. Avery Morrow scored one run, and Rilee Quickle collected one RBI and she was hit by a pitch.

Collecting steals were Hattan, Quickle (three) and Sanders.

Quickle was the winning pitcher, allowing six runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks in seven innings. She ended the outing with eight strikeouts.
