LEESBURG — The Fairfield Lions earned a two-goal win on Monday over a Highland County rival, the McClain Tigers, at Fairfield High School.

Fairfield led the non-conference contest by a 2-0 score when halftime arrived.

The first goal scored was by senior Logan McIntosh off a free kick for the 1-0 lead.

That goal was followed by senior Corey Zimmerman scoring a goal, also off a free kick, for the two-goal lead in the first half.

The second half saw both teams have their opportunities to either add to their lead or cut into the two-goal advantage, but to no avail, as each team was scoreless in the second half.

Fairfield keeper Zane Matthews had the shutout at goal.

"It's always going to be a tough game against McClain, being this close in proximity to each other. Both teams wanted it, and I thought our guys played well today," Fairfield head coach Jacob Alexander said. "Those free kick goals were big timing-wise, Logan getting his and then Corey a little bit after that, stepping up too defensively.

"Zane Matthews, I can't speak enough about some of the saves he makes. He is our savior back there at times.”

Fairfield seniors honored following the boys game were Corey Zimmerman, Logan McIntosh, Zane Matthews, Dane Hodson and Carson Jenkins.

"This senior class has been a fun one. They came in as freshmen, winning our first sectional title in I don't know how many years, and then it's been building the program back ever since,” Alexander said. “We've had some success at times, and we've had our battles of trying to turn the ship around, and tonight was one of those days that things clicked.

“Defensively, we played a great game with the back line and with Zane, but the seniors are a lot of the reason for tonight's success of just coming out with a positive attitude and helping everybody play to the best of their potential."

Fairfield’s win lifts them to an overall record of 3-11-0, while McClain also now stands at 3-11-0 overall this season.

Next for the Lions is a Southern Hills Athletic Conference game on Wednesday, Oct. 9 away at West Union with a 6:45 p.m. start.

The Tigers are scheduled to play again Wednesday, Oct. 9 at home in a non-conference game vs. the Eastern Warriors.
