  • America needs tax reform

Reforming our tax code will help businesses, both large and small. Since 1986, our corporate tax rate changed from being one of the most competitive to the highest in the developed world. In addition, the top tax rate faced by small businesses rose from 28 percent to 44.6 percent, including Obamacare taxes and other penalties, and entrepreneurs have been crushed by complexity.

  • Zika: Crisis or sentinel event?
Alarm about Zika will be a public relations exercise, covering the waste of millions of human lives and billions of dollars on ineffective or harmful campaigns, if it does not open a discussion of why diseases on their way out in the 1970s are coming back now.

  • Ghost Stories: ‘The wickedest man makes a decision’
People closed up their places of business and rushed from all part of the town toward John Calvin Van Pelt's depot. An immense crowd of men and women assembled before the scene of so many prayers and songs. Each looked at the other, and wondered what was going to happen next.

  • Beyond transparency, we need accountability
Accountability is essential to good governance. I’m not just talking about “transparency” — that is, citizens’ ability to know what’s being done in our name. That’s important, but equally important is holding accountable those who made the decision to do it: ensuring that they are accountable to policy-makers, adhere to their obligations, follow the law, and that their actions are appropriate and responsive to the needs of the country. This may be part and parcel of good governing, but it’s elusive.

  • Caving in, once again
It is particularly galling to learn that the Obama administration is preparing to unilaterally make further concessions that would further the Iranian regime’s ability to engage in terrorist activities and strengthen its military capabilities. The latest scheme under consideration would jeopardize our own national security, destabilize the world’s financial system and lead to increased volatility in the Middle East.

  • Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution is clear
In 2005, Minority Leader Harry Reid said, "Nowhere in the Constitution does it say the Senate has a duty to give presidential appointees a vote." Three years prior, in 2002, former Chief Judge of the D.C. Circuit Abner Mikva – a Carter appointee – said that "the Senate should not act on any Supreme Court vacancies that might occur until after the next presidential election."

  • Take steps today to reduce national debt
Whether it is this administration or the next, this Congress or the next, eventually our nation’s financial day of reckoning will come. High levels of debt will increase the likelihood of a fiscal crisis in the United States, as lawmakers will have less flexibility to respond to unexpected challenges. The economy will suffer due to reduced private capital and lower productivity, while families will feel very real consequences through lower wages and higher interest rates.

  • SSCC president praises Gov. Kasich’s State of the State
There is no area more ambitious than this governor’s efforts to reduce the cost of college for Ohio’s young people. In addition to highlighting a two-year tuition freeze and progress made since last year’s task force on efficiency and affordability, the governor outlined three common sense reforms to significantly reduce the cost of a four-year degree.
