Fatal shooting under investigation
A fatal shooting is under investigation in Marshall Township. At approximately 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, Hillsboro Fire and Rescue and the Highland County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence on Garch Road. According to Sheriff Ron Ward, the preliminary investigation "appears to indicate this was a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

NB&T Financial Group, Inc. receives Community National Corporation shareholder approval for merger
NB&T Financial Group, Inc.("NBTF"), parent company of The National Bank and Trust Company ("NB&T") of Wilmington, has announced that on Dec. 18, the shareholders of Community National Corporation ("CNC"), parent company of Community National Bank of Franklin, approved the merger of CNC with NBTF, according to the terms of the merger agreement dated June 30, 2009, and amended Oct. 12, 2009, between the two companies.

Ohio awarded $1.8 million for broadband mapping

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland has announced the State of Ohio was awarded a $1.8 million federal grant to help implement the Strickland Administration’s plan to compile and map broadband availability in Ohio, including location, available speed and type of technology delivering the service.

Cordray supports ban on mortgage incentives

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray has joined 14 other state attorneys general to support elimination of incentives paid to loan officers and mortgage brokers that result in borrowers being placed in loans that are riskier and more expensive than they need to be.

Prosecutor cautions commissioners on further budget cuts

Highland County Prosecutor Jim Grandey cautioned county commissioners on further budget reductions in his office next year. Speaking at the Dec. 23 meeting of the Highland County Commission, Grandey said he had budget-related questions as the commissioners plan 2010.

Why health care insurance reform is needed
When the Clinton's were debating health care in the early 1990s, 95 cents on every insurance premium dollar went to pay claims. Now it is slightly above 80% which means that about 20% of what everyone pays for health insurance goes to profit and administrative costs including executive pay.
