Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Ohio Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Andy Wilson, and Ohio Department of Children and Youth (DCY) Director Kara Wente have announced two new initiatives aimed at helping children in the state who may be at risk of human trafficking.

Highland County commissioners Terry Britton, David Daniels and Brad Roades met with Highland County Clerk of Courts Dwight “Ike” Hodson during their Wednesday, Jan. 21 meeting to discuss flooding in the clerk’s office that occurred this week.

With the holidays officially over, it’s a matter of time until credit card bills from last month’s spending find their way into Ohioans’ mailboxes. While many individuals may be tempted to quickly set those bills aside, the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Financial Institutions (DFI) encourages everyone to slow down, review statements for any questionable charges, and consider how they might keep their financial goals on track in 2026.

Ohio’s drive to boost reading scores using the science of reading has had a rocky start in the two years since Gov. Mike DeWine fought for the change, with scores going the wrong direction.

In 1966, McClain High School junior Dean Waddell, a member of the school’s swim team, set a record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.60. That record has stood the test of time for 60 years until Tuesday, Jan. 20, when MHS senior Ethan Eakins smashed it, clocking in at 1:00:50. 

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch from Saturday morning (Jan. 24) through late Sunday night for Highland and surrounding counties. Heavy snow with total accumulations between 4 and 6 inches is possible.

Charles White applied for his pension on Oct. 28, 1833 at the age of 70 in Highland County. At that time, he stated that he was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia on Sept. 5, 1763 (tombstone inscription states 1761).
