On this 27th day of February – a month that is a wicked stepsister to the frigid witch that is January – I hereby declare that winter is over. Done. Fini. History. Nada. No mas. As of this moment, spring has sprung. There are three unmistakable signs that spring has arrived in southern Ohio.
   • Freshly Firestoned and Bridgestoned skunks become part of the rural highway roadkill landscape. (There’s a certain Pennsylvania groundhog that’s going to join them, too.)
   • Reds pitchers and catchers report to spring training.
   • Taxes owed and/or tax refunds slip into coffee break conversations, as do “bubble” teams for the NCAA basketball tournament. (No, UC is not a bubble team.)

Fiscal concerns at the Highland County Airport were discussed at length at Wednesday’s meeting of the Highland County Board of Commissioners. Airport representatives Dr. Paul Terrell, Dan Cowdrey, Virginia Hope and Tom Hudson met with commissioners Shane Wilkin and Tom Horst regarding concerns over airport funding. Commissioner Gary Heaton was not in attendance at the meeting.

With “regrets,” the Southern State Community College Board of Trustees accepted the resignation of trustee Don Gephart at Wednesday night’s board meeting held at the central campus. Gephart, who was appointed by Ohio Governor Ted Strickland, served from July 2008 until his resignation, submitted to the college earlier this month. Gephart cited re-occurring health issues for his resignation.

Betsy Dawn Brogan, 34, of Hillsboro, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 24, 2010 at the Clinton Memorial Hospital in Wilmington.
