    Smith indicted on aggravated robbery charge

    A Highland County man arrested in January in connection with an armed robbery at the Beechwood Food Mart has been indicted on first-degree charges.
      Larry W. Smith, 41, was indicted by a grand jury this week in Highland County Common Pleas Court on one count of aggravated robbery, a felony of the first degree.

    U.S. Secretary of labor announces continued assistance for laid off air park workers
    TOLEDO — While in Ohio Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announced a $2,932,835 National Emergency Grant supplemental award to provide services to an additional 729 workers affected by layoffs at Wilmington Air Park in Wilmington, according to a release from the DOL website. Following an initial grant in November 2008 and one other previous award of supplemental funding with dislocated workers added as more layoffs occurred, a total of approximately 2,360 individuals now will be served.

    Judge rules in favor of village in civil suit; former treasurer ordered to pay $194,575
    Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss ruled in favor of the village of Lynchburg in a civil suit filed against the village's former treasurer, ordering her to pay $194,575.

    Hillsboro man indicted on second-degree felony child endangering
    A Hillsboro man has been indicted on a second-degree felony charge of endangering children involving an incident with a 3-year-old child, that left the child with "ongoing medical problems." 
      Gregory Kiley Jr. was indicted Tuesday by a grand jury in Highland County Common Pleas Court on one count of endangering children, a felony of the first degree.

    Suspect shot and killed in Bainbridge home invasion
    A man was shot and killed during a home invasion in the Bainbridge area Monday, according to the Pike County Sheriff's Office.
     Sheriff Richard Henderson told The Highland County Press on Tuesday that in the 4000 block of Morgan Fork Road Monday morning a property owner interrupted a home invasion. The property has a Bainbridge address, he said, but it is located in Pike County.

    A swing set and a mail box are what Emily Brook Davis wants for her fifth birthday. Her "Pappy" Doug Chaney is hoping that the little girl can stay out of the hospital.
      Emily, the 2011 poster child for Highland County Society for Children and Adults telethon, suffers from familial dysautonomia, also known as Riley-Day syndrome, an auto-immune disorder.

    The Hillsboro Police Department, with assistance from the Highland County Sheriff's Office, made two arrests Sunday, Feb. 6 in connection with an alleged meth lab in the basement of a residence at 252 Bigelow St. in Hillsboro.

    Ohio lawmakers asked to consider legal advertising reform WATCH THE VIDEO
    Highland County Press owner Rory Ryan met with southern Ohio lawmakers Sen. David Daniels and Rep. Cliff Rosenberger Friday, Feb. 4 to discuss possible amendments to Ohio law regarding the publication of legal notices.
     Ryan presented a letter to the legislators during their town-hall, open-door meeting Friday afternoon at the Highland County Administration Building in Hillsboro. Daniels, a Greenfield Republican, asked Ryan for a brief overview on the proposal.
     "I'd like to take this opportunity to encourage you to amend Ohio law as it pertains to newspaper advertising of public legal notices,"Ryan said. "While some Ohio lawmakers have made recent attempts to address this substantial cost to Ohio taxpayers, their efforts have been, thus far, futile."
