Southern State recognizes Highland District Hospital for donations of medical equipment

Staying true to its mission, Southern State Community College continues to provide affordable, accessible, high-quality education to its service area and beyond. One of the many ways they accomplish this is through community relationships with area businesses and organizations.
Highland District Hospital, a long-time educational partner with Southern State’s Health Sciences division, has made a recent donation of hospital beds, an infant warmer, bassinets, and other patient care equipment that was previously used in their Obstetrics/Maternity Department, which closed in 2022. Southern State will use these items to enhance the nursing skill lab environment and improve pediatric care learning experiences for the students. The additional equipment supports the recent increase in enrollment in the Practical Nursing Program.
“Southern State aims to meet the needs of the rapidly evolving healthcare industry and donations such as this help to make that possible,” says Dr. Julianne Krebs, Dean of Health Sciences at Southern State Community College. “Highland District Hospital continues to offer valuable support, not only for our community but also for the Health Sciences Programs at Southern State,” she added.
Students interested in the healthcare professions have many pathways to choose from at Southern State. The programs are designed to provide students with hands-on experience in both classroom and clinical settings and cover a broad range of topics, including anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, medical-surgical nursing, and nursing leadership and management.
In addition to programming and curriculum, Southern State Community College offers a range of resources and support services to help students succeed. These include academic advising, tutoring services, and access to state-of-the-art simulation labs.
"Our goal is to provide our students with the tools they need to succeed in their academic and professional careers," said Dr. Krebs. "We are confident that our Nursing Program will produce exceptional nurses who will make a difference in the healthcare industry."

Applications for the Associate Degree Nursing Program are now being accepted for the Fall 2023 Semester. There are many pathways available to enter the health science field – STNA, LPN, RN, medical assisting, phlebotomy, and more.
