Indiana man sentenced in Highland County counterfeiting case

An Indiana man was sentenced to a year in prison recently after pleading guilty to counterfeiting charges from a 2024 case in Highland County Common Pleas Court.

Austin Huffman, 33, of Albion, Ind. was indicted by a Highland County grand jury in June 2024 and charged with four counts of counterfeiting, all fourth-degree felonies. He was not arrested until August 2026.

Huffman pleaded guilty to two of the charges Sept. 2, with the other two dismissed.

For both charges, it is alleged that on or about Dec. 18, 2023, Huffman, “with the purpose to defraud, or knowing that he was facilitating a fraud, did pass, utter, sell, purchase, conceal or transfer a counterfeit obligation or other security of the United States.”

Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss sentenced Huffman to six months in prison on each count, to run consecutively, for a total of 12 months in prison. He had 31 days of jail time credit. Huffman was also ordered to pay $100 in restitution to each of the two victims in this case.

Huffman was admitted into the Correctional Reception Center in Orient Sept. 9, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
