McClain students have gone out into the village to serve their community on a day in May since 2015, and each year the town shines brighter for their efforts. It’s called MHS Day, and this year’s event is set for May 9.

The whole high school is involved in the day of community service, and most of the teachers and staff join in, too.

McClain Principal Matt Shelton said previously that everyone is always excited for the annual MHS Day. “Watching everyone come together every year for efforts centered around making our community even better is a great feeling.”

As with previous years, students’ tasks for the day will include trash pickup around town, mulching, painting, cleaning at the cemetery, clean-up and painting at the parks, planting flowers, and other various projects in and around Greenfield.

This year there will be some new projects, according to FFA officers Addison Goddard and Toree Wareikis who are tasked with heading up organizing the annual event. Some of those new projects are a fundraising car wash to benefit the auditorium revitalization, reading to and doing a craft with students in kindergarten through second grade, making birthday cake boxes to donate to a local food pantry, and creating hygiene bags for the homeless shelter.

According to Goddard, Adena is providing some funding for the community service day, and its logo is included on the MHS Day T-shirts that participants wear. Any additional funding will be provided by the McClain FFA.

As with last year, the McClain FFA has handled organizing all the projects to be done. On the day of the event, students and staff will get started around 8 a.m. then head back to the school for lunch. Following that, all will be able to participate in some fun activities at the school.

Goddard and Wareikis said they are still looking for ways for McClain students to help the community on MHS Day, and if anyone has some ideas, they are welcome to share them with them. They can be contacted via email at addison.goddard@greenfieldmcclain.org and toree.wareikis@greenfieldmcclain.org.

Also that day is a hiring event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the courthouse lawn. It’s hosted by the village of Greenfield. In previous years, part of holding this event during MHS Day is to invite the high school students who are out and about that morning to see what careers are available to them right here in Greenfield.

“It's inspiring to see the high school students and staff come together each year for MHS Day, and I'm especially proud of the FFA students who took the initiative to organize it,” Shelton said. “Their efforts reflect a strong desire to give back to a community that continually supports our school.”
