RIO GRANDE — The Whiteoak Wildcats and the Symmes Valley Vikings combined for 33 runs, but it was the Wildcats who scored the most, outlasting the Vikings 18-15 in a non-league game Monday at the University of Rio Grande.
"Things don't always go as planned, but once again these kids showed guts and perseverance and clawed out a win," WHS head coach Chris Veidt said. "They just continued to fight and find a way."
The game was full of runs from the start, as SV scored five runs in the top of the first, but the Wildcats responded with four in the bottom half of the same inning.
WHS took an 11-5 lead with a seven-run second, and then for good measure scored one run in the third.
SV rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth, then put up six more runs on the scoreboard in the top half of the fifth.
The Wildcats came back with a two-run fifth and four-run sixth. SV could only add one run in the top of the seventh.
Leading WHS at the plate for WHS was Gage Carraher at 4-for-5, including a triple and four runs.
Michael Smith followed with a 3-for-4 day, also scoring four runs, and Doc Seip went 2-for-5.
"Michael was outstanding for us offensively (Monday) and also made some clutch defensive plays. Gage made some nice adjustments offensively and really broke out the stick. He also got another save in a very clutch situation."
Tyler Williams and Tyler Roberts each had one hit.
Nathan Hauke (2-2) was the winning pitcher for WHS, throwing two innings of relief. He allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits and no walks. Carraher earned his second save of the season, throwing one inning of relief, with one walk and one strikeout. Carraher gave up zero hits.
Also pitching for WHS were Todd Ridener and Emery.
"Once again, we had 13 guys contribute, and that is always a good sign," Veidt said.
WHS will play again on Tuesday when they face Ripley at RHS in Southern Hills League play.
