Miami Trace boys, Westfall girls win McClain Invitational

GREENFIELD — The 2012 boys and girls high school golf season got under way in a wild day of weather in the annual McClain Invitational at Buckeye Hills Golf Course. Being the first time the event was held with boys and girls golf on the same day, players overcame hard pouring rain followed by a slight drizzle, along with gusts of wind and even some sunshine as the Miami Trace boys and Westfall girls were the winners of Friday's season-opening event.

In the boys event, Miami Trace won with a low team score of 342 in the 18-hole event. London was second at 343, followed in third by the host McClain Tigers at 347. Hillsboro was fourth with a 352 score, and Chillicothe was fifth at 362. Whiteoak was sixth with a score of 399, and rounding out the standings were Zane Trace (401) and Circleville (417).

As for the third-place Tigers, Adam Sharp led the team with a low-score of 79, followed by Seth Willman at 86 and Aaron Sharp at 90. Evan Mustard finished with a score of 92, and Kyle Willett scored an 108. Aaron Litteral rounded out the MHS scoring with a 114.

Also from Highland County, the Hillsboro Indians were led by Austin Bagshaw, as the sophomore led all golfers with a low score of 75.

Bagshaw was followed by HHS teammate Spencer Michael, who totaled an 84. Jacob Deatley and Alex Vanzant each had scores of 94, while Cole Reveal totaled a 106 and Travis Wehrung finished with a 116.

The final Highland County school in the event, Whiteoak, was led by senior Luke Taggert with an 82, followed by Nick Wardlow at 100 and Blake Trublood at 107. Stephen Anderson finished with a score of 110, and Kyle Marker totaled 119. Graham Douglas rounded out the Wildcats' scoring at 121.

Individual low scorers for other schools included: Tanner Higgins of MT with an 82, Austin Smith of London at 83, Gabe Preston of Chillicothe at 82, Nate Newman of Zane Trace at 84 and Trevor Webb of Circleville at 97.

In the six-team girls event, Westfall's Brenna Post led all golfers with a low-score of 78 as Westfall won with a low team score of 338.

HHS was second at 399, and MHS was third at 416. Logan Elm placed fourth at 475, and Circleville was fifth at 539. In sixth was Zane Trace with a score of 518.

For second-place Hillsboro, Halee Allen led with a 95, followed with a 96 by Haylee Wehrung. Arden Knauff scored a 101, and Mallory Mullenix totaled 107. Haleigh Lovett and Hanna Brown each scored a 108.

As for the third-place Lady Tigers, who are the defending South Central Ohio League champions, Morgan Dettwiller led MHS with a low-score of 88 and Shania Massie followed with a 98. Brittany Massie scored a 106, and Sarah Brickey scored a 118. Kaylee Smith rounded out the MHS scoring at 124.
