LEESBURG — The first time the Fairfield Lady Lions faced the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats, they held them scoreless with a no-hitter; the second time around, it was close to the same as FHS shutout the Lady 'Cats, 6-0 Thursday at Fairfield High School for their ninth Southern Hills League win of the season.
The win moved the Lady Lions to 11-5 overall, with a 9-0 record in the league. WHS falls to 2-13 overall.
Fairfield did their scoring in two innings, taking a 2-0 lead after the first and their six-run lead following the fifth inning.
"This was a big league win for us," FHS head coach Matthew Zimmerman said. "Whiteoak has a great pitcher, and we've had to adjust to different speeds at the plate the past few games.
"We waited late (Thursday) to score runs, but we had a couple nice two-out hits. We didn't power hit tonight, but we base hit."
The first inning began with Fairfield's Courtney Huff (1-for-2, two runs, one walk) forcing a four-pitch walk and then taking second base. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Shelby Smithson. With two outs, Lauren Larrick (2-for-3, two runs) hit a triple, and Sirenity Smith (2-for-3, three RBIs) singled, scoring Larrick.
In the fifth, Kaitlin Evans (1-for-3, one run), Huff, Whitney Hanenkrat (1-for-3, two RBIs, one run) and Larrick all scored runs.
[[In-content Ad]]Fairfield heated up with Evans hitting a one-out single, followed by a base hit by Huff. With two outs, Hanenkrat singled, scoring both Evans and Huff. Larrick followed with a double, moving Hanenkrat to third. Both runners scored on a single by Smith.
Also gaining a hit for FHS was Halie Chain.
Tallying the three hits for WHS were Molly Oliver and two hits by Caitlyn Arledge. Makayla Wescott forced the lone walk.
The pitching win went to Larrick (11-4), as she pitched seven innings. The senior allowed no runs on three hits and one walk. She finished with 13 strikeouts, facing 25 batters.
Whiteoak freshman Kiley Sosby was charged with the loss in the circle. She pitched six innings, allowing six runs (six earned) on eight hits and one walk. She finished with six strikeouts as she faced 27 batters.
"Kiley hit her spots, and we have improved, but sometimes that's hard to see," WHS head coach Bret Malone said. "There have been others who have said to me how much we've improved since day one.
"We've been working on fielding and catching fly balls in practice, but our hitting is suffering. It's also tough only having nine players right now, since we have three players who are injured. As the season continues, we should compete at a higher level, if we come ready to play."
