MOWRYSTOWN — Pressure by the Manchester Lady Greyhounds' defense made for a tough 32 minutes for Whiteoak Monday evening. WHS was forced into many turnovers and en route lost their Southern Hills Athletic Conference opener, 72-33.
This was the first time WHS played since their season opener nine days ago.
The game played at WHS was all Manchester from the opening tip, starting with a 9-0 run, while doubling the output of WHS in the opening quarter with a 14-7 lead.
In that first frame, unofficially, the Lady 'Cats (0-1, 1-1) were forced into 10 turnovers. The second quarter was no better for the home team as they were forced into 10 more turnovers and trailed 32-15 at the break.
After three quarters, WHS trailed 49-24, and in the final eight minutes, WHS was outscored 23-9 as MHS did all their scoring inside the 3-point line.
Manchester (2-0, 2-2) scored every way possible off turnovers, as many of their points were in transition off the aforementioned turnovers via steals or on put-back opportunities following offensive rebounds.
"(Monday) we just didn't show up," Whiteoak head coach Mike Cooper said. "We were as soft of a team as I've ever seen. Manchester outplayed us in all aspects."
Cooper spoke about how they have to improve their overall play.
"We have to come in and work hard," he said. "We have to realize we need to play at a higher level.
"We have to get more physical and get used to the pressure of our opponents and play better as a team."
Leading all scorers was Manchester's Morgan Johnson with 21 points as she made 10 two-point buckers and was 1-of-3 from the free-throw line. Her best quarter was the third with eight points.[[In-content Ad]]
Johnson was followed by Hannah Rideout with 17 points, including 13 points in the second half. Also in double figures for MHS were Haylee Adams with 13 points (5-of-6 from the free-throw line) and Rainelle Casey with 10 points.
As for the opening frame, the first WHS points came with 4:42 left on the clock with a jumper by Sunnie Lehr. WHS made it a 9-5 score with a 3-pointer from Emma Wardlow with 2:49 left in the quarter. The final points of the frame by the Lady 'Cats were with 49 seconds when Lehr scored points inside the paint.
WHS didn't score again until there was 2:46 left in the second off a free throw by Emily Stratton. WHS scored a field goal with 1:49 left in the quarter when Courtney Cummings scored with put-back points. During the WHS drought, MHS went on a 15-0 run.
In the WHS third, Morgan Campbell sank a 3-pointer, and in the fourth, Wardlow made a 3-pointer.
Leading WHS in scoring was Wardlow with eight points, followed by Campbell with seven. Misty McClure and Lehr each totaled six points. Stratton totaled three, while Brittany Luman scored two and Clarissa Johnson made a free throw for one point.
"We worked all week on their press in practice, but we didn't take care of the ball," Cooper said. "Maybe it is my fault for not having the girls in the right spots, but their press was great, and they took us out of our game in the first half."
WHS will play again on Thursday, Dec. 6 as they will play at Ripley.
