Fairfield wins over rival Whiteoak in 1st meeting of season

MOWRYSTOWN — Points were at a premium in the first half when the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats hosted the Fairfield Lady Lions to start the week in Southern Hills Athletic Conference play. The two rivals combined for 24 points in the first half, but it was Fairfield who managed to break away in the final two frames, defeating the hosts, 44-21.
The first frame saw very little scoring from either side, with the Lady Lions (1-1, 2-2) leading 8-6 after eight minutes. Once the second quarter ended, FHS outscored the Lady ’Cats, 8-2 in the quarter and led by a 16-8 score at halftime.
Play picked up more in the second half, including a third quarter that began with Fairfield’s Trinity Huff scoring four straight points, including a layup off a steal by Alexis Tate for a 20-8 advantage with 7:04 left in the quarter. Huff led the Lady Lions with 13 points, including finishing with four two-point baskets and five converted free throws.
WHS (0-2, 0-3) answered with a 3-pointer by Maggie Carr at the 5:39 mark, as that was the lone points scored for the Lady ’Cats in the quarter, and they didn’t score again until there was 7:27 left in the fourth frame.

In between those field goals for the Lady ’Cats, Fairfield went on an 11-0 run that meshed into the fourth quarter, The run began with a steal and full court trip to the basket by Grace Shope, who totaled 12 points, with 5:15 on the scoreboard. From there, Blake Adams scored two points, as did Tate, who also went the distance of the court for two points and a 26-11 advantage with 1:33 left in the third.
FHS continued the scoring with a 3-pointer from Shope at the 1:04 mark for a 29-11 lead to conclude the third-quarter scoring. The fourth began with a layup by Shope off a steal, giving the Lady Lions a 20-point lead with 7:41 left in the quarter.
WHS broke the scoring run of FHS with a put-back basket by Kensley Bailey with 7:27 left in the quarter. The Lady Lions answered with two points off a fast break from Abigail Newkirk and a jumper from Shope for a 35-13 advantage. WHS came back with a put back from Lexi Jones, but that was answered with two more points by Newkirk, who went unguarded to the basket with 4:54 left in the final quarter.
The Lady ’Cats came back with four straight points, including a layup by Cylee Bratton, FHS kept the advantage and the momentum by outscoring the Lady ’Cats 5-4 for the final 2:55 on the SHAC game.
For the game, WHS was 2-of-8 (25 percent) from the free-throw line, while FHS was 9-of-17 (53 percent). Combined, the two teams unofficially committed 48 turnovers.
FHS will play again on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at Paint Valley, then on Thursday, Dec. 8, the Lady Lions will host Peebles in SHAC play.
Whiteoak is scheduled to play their next game on Thursday, Dec. 8 when they host North Adams, which will be a conference game.

On Thursday, Dec. 1, the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats lost their SHAC opener to the West Union Lady Dragons, 52-45 at WUHS.
West Union began the game with a 17-3 first quarter, followed by WHS answering with a 21-point second quarter while holding the Lady Dragons to five points in that span for a 24-21 lead by WHS at halftime.
In the third quarter, West Union outscored the Lady ’Cats, 14-8, and in the final frame, WHS scored 13 points while WU totaled 16 points in the final eight minutes.
Leading WHS in scoring was Lexi Jones with 17 points, as she was 9-of-14 from the free-throw line and made four two-point baskets. Also in double figures was Maggie Carr with 12 points, including two 3-pointers with one in the second quarter and one in the fourth.
