Fairfield girls cross-country are district runners-up

The Fairfield Lady Lions cross-country team placed as district runners-up on Saturday at the University of Rio Grande for the first time since the 1980s.
FHS was one of two district runners-up at the event, with the top two finishing teams being crowned district champions and the third- and fourth-place teams being district runners-up at the Division III SE District race, with there being just one race this year instead of the usual two.
FHS placed fourth in the race with 129 points. The average time of the Lady Lions was 22:46.69, and the team had a time of 1:53:47.81.
Freshman Ciara Colwell was third overall with a time of 20:30.54. Next for the Lady Lions was Megan Gragg in 28th place, with the sophomore finishing with a time of 22:33.94.

“I couldn't be prouder of my girls team,” FHS head coach Raymond Friend said. “Last year, we were third in the league and barely qualified to regionals. This year, we won the league and just captured our first district runner-up trophy since the 1980s.
“Ciara has a good chance at qualifying for state if she runs like she did Saturday. One of our team leaders Megan Gragg had another solid race, as she is a big reason for our team’s success.”
Sophomore Alexis Swisher was 36th overall with a time of 23:06.62, and in 39th place was junior Chloe Barber at 23:12.62. Also for FHS, Hayleigh Lowe, a sophomore, had a time of 24:29.71. Teammate Sarah Wuellner, a freshman, finished with a time of 25:42.78, while sophomore Meadow Cunningham had a time of 28:46.21.
“Meadow and Sarah just keep getting better,” Friend told The Highland County Press. “Alexis had a great race. Chloe and Hayleigh Lowe, this is their first year running, and both are in our Top 5 runners.”
Also in the race were Lynchburg-Clay and Whiteoak. WHS finished in 13th place with 305 points. They had an average time of 25:48.45, with a total time of 2:09:02.24. Taylor Tackett, a senior, led WHS in 56th place with a time of 24:12.47. Also for WHS was Kattie Taylor, a senior, with a time of 24:27.83.
For LC, Angela McLaughlin, a junior, was 46th place with a time of 23:52.89.
