Whiteoak High School launches hands-on flooring installation program

Whiteoak High School is giving students a head start into the skilled trades with a new flooring installation program that has quickly become one of the school’s most engaging career-focused initiatives. Over the past several weeks, students have been learning the fundamentals of carpet and flooring installation through hands-on instruction from industry professionals.

Inside a new training space on campus, students can be found measuring, cutting, and fitting commercial carpet, VCT (Vinyl Composite Tile)  and LVT(Luxury Vinyl Tile) under the guidance of experienced flooring installers. In one recent session, students carefully practiced aligning seams and securing materials—an activity that reflects the type of real-world experience the program is designed to provide.

School leaders say the program was created to help students explore career pathways that lead directly to in-demand jobs. With many trades experiencing worker shortages, the flooring industry offers strong opportunities for graduates who enjoy problem-solving, working with their hands, and building practical skills.

The program’s success has exceeded expectations. Over the past three weeks, students have completed both classroom instruction and hands-on training, culminating in a final written assessment. The hands-on portion has allowed them to gain confidence working with professional tools, materials, and installation techniques.

“This has been an incredible opportunity for our students,” said Mrs. Emery. “They’re not only learning a trade—they’re learning teamwork, responsibility, and pride in their work. These are skills that stay with them long after high school.”

Many thanks to The Carpet Outlet, Advanced Flooring Technology, and CFI(Certified Flooring Installers) who have played an essential role in bringing the program to life, donating time, expertise, and materials. Trainers have praised the students for their focus and willingness to learn, noting that several already show natural talent for the trade.

Whiteoak High School plans to continue expanding career-readiness programs as part of its commitment to preparing students for both college and skilled employment. With strong student interest and positive results from this pilot group, the flooring installation program is expected to grow in the coming years.

For now, the freshly laid flooring throughout the Wildcat Learning Center stands as a testament to what students can accomplish with the right support. As the first program offered in the new center, it provides a preview of the exciting career possibilities ahead. Stay tuned for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for our new building soon.
