Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost’s office is asking the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas to throw out a lawsuit that would eliminate the state’s six-week abortion ban, just months after saying that said ban would be void if voters chose to legalize and protect access to abortion.

Supporters of the constitutional amendment that enshrined reproductive rights in Ohio’s Constitution believe putting it on the ballot in 2023 was a key to its success, and they also believe the aftershocks will be felt at the ballot box in 2024.

The ACLU, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and the WilmerHale law firm filed a request to make changes to their lawsuit in the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas, arguing the Ohio Issue 1 amendment passed by 57 percent of voters should be applied and the state’s six-week abortion ban law should be removed for good.

The legislative back-and-forth regarding reproductive rights continues to sow uncertainty in Ohio, but advocates who worked to get a constitutional amendment in place say are ready to continue the fight.

Legislation that would give tax credits for donations to “pregnancy resource centers” which do not advise individuals on abortion was introduced in the Ohio Senate this week.

Ohio House Speaker Jason Stephens threw cold water on a bid to thwart the recent abortion rights amendment Issue 1. Instead of attempting to deny the courts’ jurisdiction or rushing to the ballot with a repeal effort, Stephens argued lawmakers should focus on maternal and early childhood care.

Both sides of the debate brought along an outside expert to bolster their arguments on stage.

Religious variations abound in the state of Ohio, and some members of different churches are taking what they’ve learned in their lives and through decades of experience into the ballot box as they vote on Issue 1, the reproductive rights constitutional amendment.

A chorus of medical students and other future health professionals is trying to get the word out that re-enactment of harsh abortion restrictions will erode their numbers in Ohio, which already suffer from one of greatest numbers of care deserts in the country.

Before Issue 1 was fully realized as a ballot initiative, Ohio Republicans met at last year’s March for Life, talking about the new landscape Roe v. Wade’s downfall would bring following the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision.

The topic of parental rights does not appear in Ohio Issue 1 on the ballot Nov. 7.

When Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022, the physicians at Ohio Reproductive Medicine took to their website, hoping to reassure patients that their care would still be available.

In the Nov. 7 general election, Ohioans will decide whether or not to approve Issue 1, a constitutional amendment for reproductive rights.
