Winning streak, season ends for Lady Tigers

GREENFIELD - The luck of 11 straight wins came to a close Thursday in Greenfield as the McClain Lady Tigers were knocked out of the Division II SE District Sectional tournament. MHS allowed 12 hits and 12 runs, while committing three errors in a 12-1 six-inning loss to Sheridan.
The Lady Tigers were held to three hits in the postseason game, gaining two in their run- producing fifth inning.
"We made too many mistakes," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "We told the girls before the game whoever made the least amount of mistakes would win the game, and that is what happened. I felt like we hit the ball, but where we hit it, Sheridan was there to catch it."
Trailing by three runs, 3-0, the Lady Tigers scored its lone run during the bottom of the fifth inning.
Alex Taylor led off the inning with a double hit to the outfield. But quickly thereafter, MHS collected two outs with Taylor standing on second base.
But the Lady Tigers still had one out on their side, and they kept the inning alive - and at the time, the game close - with a RBI single by Kate Crabtree.
Taylor was the only run who crossed home plate for MHS, as MHS added just one hit for the remainder of the game, with Megan Dettwiller hitting a single in the sixth.
In the circle, Megan Dettwiller was charged with the loss.
As for Sheridan, they scored one run in the third, with Skinner reaching on an error. After two consecutive outs, Wilson hit an RBI single.
In the top of the fifth, Skinner reached the bases, this time, with a double. But she was forced out on a fielders choice, for the second out of the inning.
With Clouse reaching on the aforementioned fielders choice, Wilson followed by taking the bases on an error. Mautz put SHS up 5-1 with a two-run triple hit the the centerfield fence.
In the sixth, Sheridan scored nine runs on seven hits and three errors. The top half of the sixth ended with Sheridan stranding three base runners.
MHS (13-11) started off the season 2-10, then won its last 11 regular season games.
"Credit the kids, they fought back in the season and won 11 straight after we struggled early on," Haines said. "I credit the upperclassmen for that as they were responsible for us fighting our way back."
MHS says goodbye to four seniors in Kate Hammond, Cortney Hyer, Alex Taylor and Ashley Green.
"Alex was huge for us tonight and all season. She hit a couple home runs and had a good attitude," Haines said. "Kate (Hammond) was good from the plate all year, and Cortney was our leader. She showed the underclassmen the right way to do things. Ashley is a great person to be around. She never complained and had some big innings for us."
