Week 5 SCOL Football Notebook

This week is the midway point of the high school football season. Teams are starting to make their mark in the South Central Ohio League, while others are worrying about improving on the little things each week.
In the fifth week, the non-league game for the SCOL is London vs. Jonathan Alder. The remaining games are: Washington at Hillsboro, McClain at Madison-Plains and Miami Trace at Clinton-Massie.
Following the games Friday, the league will have even more distance between one another, so let's take a look at each game.
• Jonathan Alder (4-0) at London (1-0, 1-3)
The Red Raiders are coming off their most dominating game of the season in defeating the McClain Tigers 49-0 last week at LHS. They mixed in many big touchdown runs, including a 93-yard TD run by Kyle Fisher.
Against MHS, the Red Raiders totaled 473 yards of offense in their win, including 453 on the ground. Fisher led the way with 233 yards of rushing on 12 carries for 18.6 yards per carry. Josh High had a couple big TD runs, wrapping up the game with 137 yards of rushing for a ypc of 22.4.
The Pioneers defeated the MT Panthers last week by a 49-0 score. They totaled 347 yards of rushing and 115 passing yards for a total offensive output of 462 yards.
JA is the No. 1 team in Division III, Region 12 with a 4-0 mark this year. The Pioneers have also defeated CM (29-28), Marysville (21-0) and Thomas Worthington (37-0).
In their meeting last season, JA defeated the Panthers 56-0.
• Washington (1-0, 2-2) at Hillsboro (0-1, 0-4)
The Hillsboro Indians return to Richards Memorial Field after suffering a 72-7 loss to the Clinton-Massie Falcons.
Washington is coming off a dominating 42-12 league win over the Madison-Plains Golden Eagles, where they improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the SCOL. Versus the Golden Eagles, the Blue Lions totaled 401 yards of offense. In the air, Caleb Huffman passed for 153 yards, going 9-of-14.
The Blue Lions' other victory came against the Circleville Tigers (32-19). Their losses have come to the Logan Elm Braves (41-13) and Adena Warriors (20-13) in Week 1 and Week 3, respectively.
Last week for the Blue Lions, senior Jerome Pettiford rushed for 166 yards on nine carries. For the season, the senior has rushed for 529 yards in four games. Senior Reily Shaw finished last week with 40 yards rushing (seven carries) and had three receptions for 73 yards. That night, he was also crowned Washington's homecoming king. For the season, Shaw has 268 yards rushing.
In their game last week, the Indians didn't gain many yards offensively, and defensively allowed 21 points in the first quarter, along with 28 more points in the second to trail 49-0 at halftime. The Falcons added 21 more points in the third quarter and two more in the final 12 minutes. In the first half alone, the Falcons totaled over 321 yards of offense against the Indians.
Last season against the Blue Lions, HHS lost 41-12 at Gardner Park. The last win HHS has over the Blue Lions came in the '05 season, where HHS won 39-13. Since the '05 season, HHS has lost to Washington by scores of 41-14 ('06), 49-6 ('07), 7-6 ('08), 28-27 ('09) and 41-12 ('10). In their first two meetings when the league reformed, the Blue Lions won over HHS, 37-18 ('03), and HHS won in '04, 34-13.
• McClain (0-1, 1-3) at Madison-Plains (0-1, 1-3)
Either the McClain Tigers or the Madison-Plains Golden Eagles will leave the MP football field this Friday with their second win of the season.
Last week, the Tigers were dominated by the London Red Raiders, 49-0, and the Golden Eagles were defeated by the Washington Blue Lions, 42-12.
Both teams have been bitten by the injury bug, so to speak.
The Tigers will be going into the game without their best weapons in seniors Camron Cooper and Preston Wagner, who are injured.
MP will enter the game possibly without junior starting quarterback Ryne Davis (55 yards last week on 13 carries), who was injured in last week's loss to the Blue Lions at Gardner Park.
Last week against the Blue Lions, the MP offense gained 294 yards of offense with 45 rushes for 187 yards and 107 yards of passing. The defense of MP allowed 401 yards of offense, 248 yards coming from the rush.
The Tigers allowed 473 yards of offense, including a season-high 453 yards of rushing by the Red Raiders. MHS tallied 138 offensive yards. For the season, the Tigers have 488 yards of total offense.
In their game last season, MHS defeated MP 53-20.
• Miami Trace (0-1, 1-3) at Clinton-Massie (1-0, 2-2)
Last week in their loss to the Pioneers of JA, Miami Trace totaled just seven first downs. On the rushing side of their offense, MT totaled just 61 yards. Through the air, MT had 48 yards of passing for a total of 109 yards of offense.
As for the Falcons, they routed the HHS Indians, breaking a two-game losing streak, while extending their SCOL winning streak to 21 games, not losing a SCOL game since Week 7 of 2007.
In the rankings, CM is No. 11 in Division IV, Region 16 following losses to Waynesville and JA in weeks two and three of the season.
Last season, the Falcons defeated MT 56-0.
