CINCINNATI — On Thursday at Great American Ball Park, the final chapter of the memorial 2010 season was completed when Reds first baseman Joey Votto accepted his NL MVP award.

Votto was the first Reds player to win the award since Barry Larkin in 1995.

Last season Votto, a first baseman, batted .324 with 37 home runs and 113 RBI. He is the 10th Reds player to win the award. Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan each won the award twice.

Votto also received the NL Hank Aaron award, Ernie Lombardi award (Reds MVP), while being named an NL and Sporting News All-Star.

In the MVP voting, Votto received 31 first-place votes and one second-place vote.

On Thursday, Votto went 1-for-2 with two walks and one sacrifice in the season opener. One of Votto's hits was a 392-foot home run in the seventh inning.

Before the game, Votto talked about the upcoming season.

"Last year there was a lot of unknown on Opening Day," Votto said. "Our goal isn't to break a sub .500 streak or just to make the playoffs … our goal is to win the World Series."
