Turnovers cost Tigers against Piketon

CHILLICOTHE — The McClain Tigers were unable to handle the basketball Saturday night. Though committing multiple turnovers, the Tigers kept the game close in the first half, but lost their second straight game to start the season, falling to the Piketon Redstreaks 65-28 at Zane Trace High School in the Zane Trace Tip-Off Classic.
The Tigers (0-2), who were held to 14 points in the first half, scored five in the first and nine in the second frame, but allowed 26 combined in the same two quarters.
Piketon's defense pressure set the tone for the entire non-contest.
Though the Tigers kept the game within striking distance in the first half, the Redstreaks "streaked" away in the third frame, outscoring the TIgers 18-9.
Leading Piketon, of the Scioto Valley Conference, was senior Evan Legg, an All-Ohio selection last season, with a game-high 27 points.
In the third frame, Piketon (1-0) continued to use their full-court pressure defense, forcing the Tigers to make uncharacteristic miscues which led to transition points for the Redstreaks.
The bright spots for the Tigers in the third frame were seniors Zach Uhl and Jared Loftis. Uhl finished with six points.
Loftis was the most productive offensively for the Tigers in the third with two 3-pointers, both coming late in the quarter. MHS trailed 44-23 after three quarters. For the game, Loftis led MHS in scoring with 12 points.
The final quarter was no better for the Tigers, with the Redstreaks starting the final eight minutes with 11-straight points. Tanner Vanzant stopped the scoring with a free throw near the five-minute mark of the quarter. PHS won the quarter, 21-5.
In the fourth, Jacob Dillon took a charge for the Tigers.
FOr the game MHS was 9-of-17 from the free-throw line. PHS was 9-of-23.
