Tigers trip at Golden Eagles' homecoming; fall to 1-4

MT. STERLING — It was an improvement from their previous trip to Madison County, but still the bus ride back to Greenfield was a somber one as the McClain Tigers lost for the third straight week, falling to the Madison-Plains Golden Eagles 14-7 Friday night at MPHS.
The Tigers fall to 1-4 overall at the halfway point of the season and stand at 0-2 in the South Central Ohio League standings.
McClain's lone touchdown came on a hook-and-ladder play where Thomas Schrader passed to Coleston Walters, who pitched the ball to Jordan Goble. Goble ran for five yards into the end zone with 7.6 seconds left in the second quarter. Goble finished with five catches for 56 yards.
Dylan East led MHS with 65 yards rushing on 15 carries, and Clayton Burgess had 28 yards rushing on eight carries. The Tigers totaled 107 yards rushing on 40 carries.
In 66 offensive plays, MHS totaled 214 yards with Schrader passing for 107 yards (11-of-24).
Other than that, the game belonged to the Golden Eagles, who improve to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the SCOL.
With both teams playing without their starting quarterback from Week 1 (both out due to injury), it was the Golden Eagles who overcame the hurdle with junior running back Stephen Lemieux scoring both MP touchdowns.
His first touchdown came with 9:57 left in the second quarter, rushing for a 57-yard score.
The second touchdown put MP up double digits with a 9-yard catch from Wilson with 49.4 left in the first half. Lemieux finished with three receptions for 58 yards and 22 carries for 116 yards.
As a team, MP finished with 186 yards rushing (35 attempts) and 360 total offensive yards.
Wilson was 8-of-18 for 174 yards and three interceptions in the air and rushed for 71 yards on eight carries for MP. It was his first start at quarterback for the Golden Eagles, replacing Ryne Davis who was unable to play due to suffering a concussion last week against the Washington Blue Lions.
Also for MP, Chaffin had one reception for 19 yards. Carter had three receptions for 76 yards.
The Golden Eagles totaled six first downs for the game, three rushing and three passing. MHS had 12 first downs with six passing, five rushing and one via penalty.
MP will travel to Miami Trace next Friday, and MHS will host the Washington Blue Lions at McClain Field.
