Tigers move to sectional finals

CHILLICOTHE — In what is considered the second season, the McClain Tigers are undefeated. Using a 22-point fourth quarter, the Tigers have advanced to a Division II SE District sectional final, by way of defeating the Miami Trace Panthers, 53-38, Tuesday at Southeastern High School.
With the win, the Tigers broke a seven-game losing streak.
This was the third time the two teams met this season, with both teams splitting in the regular season, as they most recently met on the court this past Friday at MTHS, with MT winning 42-41. In their first meeting of the year, the Tigers won 57-39 at MHS.
In their third go-around, the No. 10-seeded Tigers used their traditional defensive output, along with 34 points in the final two quarters to move to the sectional final on Saturday, Feb. 25 against No. 2-seeded Waverly (15-5) at 8 p.m. at SEHS.
On Tuesday, the Tigers and the No. 7-seeded Panthers, were tied at nine following the first quarter, followed by a 10-8 second frame by the Tigers for a halftime lead of 19-17.
In the third frame, MHS outscored MT 12-8. Then came the fourth, MHS outscored MT by nine points at 22-13.
The Tigers (6-15) were led in scoring by freshman Ryan Faulconer with a team-high 15 points, including five two-point baskets and five free throws.
Senior Trey Lytle followed with 10 points as he was one of five Tigers who made one 3-pointer. Lytle also made three free throws and two two-point baskets.
Evan Mustard, a sophomore, followed with eight points, and junior Brent Shannon added six points. Sophomore Thomas Schrader also added six points, while freshman Bryce Duff and junior John Turner each added three points. Also scoring was freshman Wyatt Jones with two points.

The Tigers shot 16-of-29 (55 percent) from the free-throw line, while MT was 4-of-12 for 33 percent.
Leading all scorers was Trace's Blake Baldwin with 16 points, including all four MT 3-pointers.
MT finishes the season at 9-12 overall.
GAME NOTES: MHS totaled 11 fouls, while MT committed 21 fouls … MHS had 20 turnovers … MT finished with 13 turnovers.
