On Thursday, Dec. 23, the McClain Varsity wrestling team competed in the seven team Greeneview Duals.
The Tigers entered the tournament at an even 11-11 on the year, with the meet possibly being a moment that could make or break the season. Having a losing day would have put the McClain Tigers below .500, and a good day would put them on the plus side.
McClain opened with a lopsided 54-0 victory over East Clinton in the first round. In the second round, the Tigers faced the host Greeneview Fighting Rams. Greeneview has had a tremendous wrestling program, posing a huge challenge. The match went back-and-forth in score, and when the last match was contested the Tigers came out with a 34-27 win.
Tri County North and McClain squared off in the third round with both teams running neck-and-neck through the weight classes. In the end, the five forfeited weight classes by the Tigers proved to be the end of their undefeated day, as they lost the match, 36-30.
A Division I opponent in the fourth round would prove to be too much for the Tigers. Beavercreek filled every weight class, winning over MHS, 71-15.
The fifth round was the finals, McClain was pitted up against Tri County North for a second time. This time, the match was for third place. T
The final score was the same, 36-30, however, the winner wasn't as the Tigers managed to come out on the winning end this time.
At the end of the day, McClain finished 3-2, earning third place, standing at 14-13 overall, and 5-5 in duals.
Individually, Joe Unger (160), Gary Ryan (189), and Brandon Davis (285) went 5-0 on the day.
Coty Barnhart (125) was 4-1,Steven Barber (152) was 3-2 and Jacob Branham (215) was 1-0.
Joe Barnhart (171) and Lonnie Adkins (215) both won two matches, and Dustin Combs (130) and Cody Black (135) won a match.
Up next is a tri-match at East Clinton High School on Dec. 30 at 5 p.m. with the home team and Hamilton Badin. The varsity, JV and junior high teams will all be competing this night.[[In-content Ad]]
