Tigers held to 3 hits in loss to Warriors

GREENFIELD — One day following their first loss of the season, the McClain Tigers' bats were still struggling to make a connection with the baseball. The Tigers were held to three hits over seven innings, falling to the Eastern Brown Warriors, 5-4 Friday at Mitchell Park.
In their last two games, the Tigers (2-2) have been held to seven hits, as they collected four against East Clinton in a 4-2 loss.
Against Eastern they were 3-for-23, with four strikeouts. MHS forced six walks.
MHS also had three errors in their matchup against the Warriors, giving them six in their past two games.
"The biggest issue tonight was swinging the bats," MHS head coach Brandon Streitenberger said. "For some reason we couldn't hit the ball.
"Our pitching has been solid all week, we just need to start putting the ball into play."
All of their recent woes caught up with the Tigers in the sixth inning, as they allowed three runs, losing their 2-1 lead in the process.
The sixth began with MHS starting pitcher Dustin Taylor gaining two outs, first via strikeout, followed with a fly out to left field.
After a four-pitch walk forced by Faul, Broughton hit a hard ground ball for a base hit to right field. He took second on a infield error.
Following the second error by the Tigers in the inning, both runners scored on a single past first base by York. York scored later in the inning to give the Warriors a 4-1 lead. All three runs scored in the sixth by Eastern were unearned.
Eastern tallied seven hits in the game.
The first Eastern run came in the first inning when Souder scored off a passed ball. Before scoring the run, he took third on a passed ball and stole second. He initially reached the bases on a base hit.
Eastern's final run came in the seventh inning, scored by Souder. Souder, again, scored on a passed ball after beginning the inning with a single and stealing second. He advanced to third on a fly ball to right field.
As for the Tigers, they scored runs in the second, third, fifth and seventh innings.
The Tigers' first run came in the second when Kyle Flora reached the bases with a base hit, followed with a steal of second base. Flora scored on a base hit by Ryan Perie.
The Tigers took the lead in the third when Zach Uhl scored a run. Brent Shannon put MHS up 3-1 when he scored a run in the fifth inning on a passed ball.
McClain's final run crossed home plate in the seventh as Jacob Dillon slide into home head-first on a passed ball with two outs. Dillon singled to begin the inning, knocking the ball past the shortstop.
The other hit by MHS came off the bat of Jacob Branham in the sixth inning for a single.
Taylor was charged with the loss for MHS. He went six complete innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks. Taylor (0-1) struck out six batters. Uhl pitched one inning of relief, allowing one earned run on one hit.
"Dustin pitched a great game. He had good control, he was pretty consistent for us," Streitenberger said. "We just had that one bad inning in the sixth. All three runs that inning were unearned … Dustin pitched well."
York was the starting pitcher for the Warriors, pitching four innings. He allowed two runs (two earned) on two hits and four walks, while striking out two.
Ostrander was the winning pitcher. In 2 2-3 innings of relief he struck out two batters, allowing two runs, both earned, on two hits and two walks. Souder struck out the final batter in his 1-3 inning of relief for the save.
The Tigers will open their South Central Ohio League slate on Monday, April 4 as they travel to face Highland County cross-county rival Hillsboro at Shaffer Park. Last season, the Tigers and Indians shared the SCOL championship.
