Elsewhere, on Dec. 27, 1986, McClain’s defense was awesome, as the Tigers trounced Gallia Academy, 45-21.
Ten players scored for McClain, and the high man had only 10 points. Gallia was never really in this game.
East Clinton hit an astounding 58 percent from the field to edge Wilmington, 70-64.
The Hurricane got 58 points from Kerry Barker, Steve Harris and Jeff Rayman, but got very little from anybody else as they lost to the Astros.
Hillsboro and neighboring Fairfield staged a furious battle on the Leesburg court.
Fairfield led most of the way, until the Indians outscored the Lions, 18-2, in the final five minutes of the game, and took a 54-38 victory.
After the holiday break, Circleville entertained Athens on Jan. 2, 1987.
Senior Curt Vance racked up 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the red and black to a 70-56 win.
The Tigers led by only one point at halftime, but outscored Athens, 25-17, in the final quarter to take a comfortable victory.
On Saturday, January 3, McClain traveled to Frankfort Adena, where Tiger senior point guard Jeff Campbell hit eight of nine from the field for 16 points to go along with nine steals and five assists, for the best game of his career.
The Tigers hit a blazing 68 percent from the field to blow Adena away, 70-47.
Two of the best players in Clinton County hooked up, when Clinton Massie visited Wilmington.
Hot shooting Steve Harris of Wilmington scotched the nets for 13 field goals and 8 free throws – a total of 34 points. But Massie’s Mike Henry also hit 13 field goals and added seven free throws, for 33 points. Wilmington won the game, 83 – 82 in overtime.
Also on Saturday night, Circleville won a home game over Canal Winchester, 68-63, their second non-league win in two consecutive nights.
Macon Eastern defeated Hillsboro, 70-62, on Jan. 6, at Sardinia.
Eastern went into the final stanza nursing an 18-point lead. They scored only two field goals in the fourth quarter (and a few free throws) and nearly let the Indians back in the game.
On Friday, Jan. 9, Hillsboro won a ragged game against Washington, 59-55.
Both coaches admitted that neither team was very impressive in this game.
At Miami Trace, the undermanned Panthers put up a terrific struggle, but Circleville held on for a 40-39 win.
Circleville’s guard Scott Rowland racked up 24 points and had nine steals.
McClain traveled to Wilmington, where the purple and gold improved their record to 4-0 in the SCOL (9-0, overall) by downing the Hurricane, 45-36.
Joey King racked up 19 points to pace the Tigers.
Steve Harris, the SCOL’s top scorer by a wide margin, was held to 12 points.
On Saturday night in Chillicothe, 6-6 Bill Ramsey of Washington, scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Blue Lions got their third win of the season, 86-77, over Unioto.
The next Friday night, Washington played 1-9 Miami Trace on the Panthers’ hardwood.
This was a great, hard-fought battle, which Trace won, 47-45, with some great last-minute free throw shooting.
The Panthers had great scoring balance, with David McCarty and Troy McDonald totaling 10 points each, Scott Fyffe adding 9 and Barry Ankrom and Todd Beckman contributing 8 each.
The 6-1 Ankrom also grabbed 13 rebounds, which is a notable achievement. The Lions were led by Bill Ramsey, with 13 points and Rob Pittser, who added 12.
