Tigers break school record for wins

WASHINGTON C.H. — Last year, the McClain Tigers set a new school record, winning 12 matches, a huge step for the program. One of the goals going into this season was to improve on that mark, and the Tigers were able to set the new school record much higher, as they recorded three victories on the day, going 3-2 in the tournament.
The Tigers finished their regular season at 15-13.
In the first round, MHS received a bye. They saw their first action of the day in round two against Ryle High School, from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Ryle won this match 58-24.
In round three, the Tigers broke the school record with a win against the Bearcats of Paint Valley. This was a very competitive match, with only two points separating the teams, with the final score at 42-40.
In round four, the opponents were the Jets from Springfield Northeastern. The Tigers fell 42-41 in this match, giving up 18 points in the final three matches by forfeit.
In round five, the Rams from Hamilton Badin jumped out to an early 18-0 lead, but they were unable to hold off the Tigers, who would win this match 40-35.
[[In-content Ad]]In the final round of the day, the Knights from Kings High School (Division I) were unable to defeat the Tigers, who showed a great amount of heart, winning some incredible individual matches. McClain won 39-27, giving them a winning record for the tournament and finalizing their school record for victories.
Individually, two Tigers went 5-0 on the day: Joe Unger (160) and Roscoe East (170). Going 4-1 were Gary Ryan (182), Jake Branham (195) and Brandon Davis (220).
Going 3-2 were Kylee Stroud (106, 113) and Coty Barnhart (132). Winning two matches were Isaac Savage (145) and Dylan Trefz (285). Richie Rayburn (152) won the only JV match contested on the day, defeating his opponent from Northeastern by pin.
Eclipsing the 30-win plateau on the season were Unger, Ryan and Davis. Breaking 20 victories on the season were Savage and East.
Up next is the South Central Ohio League Tournament at London High School on Saturday, Feb. 11. The tournament will crown individual champions for each weight class and is the final stage on determining the team champion.
