Tigers 1 win away from SCOL title; blank London

LONDON — Not even the rain could dampen the play of the McClain Tigers boys soccer team.
On Tuesday, playing in a downpour, the Tigers earned a 7-0 South Central Ohio League win over the London Red Raiders, and in the process got even closer to their third consecutive league championship.
If the Tigers win next Tuesday at home against the Washington Blue Lions, they will have clinched no less than a share of the league championship. Since 2009, the Tigers have sat atop the SCOL standings, losing just two league games since that season. In '09, they went 10-2 in league games, and last season they were 10-0-2.
This season in the SCOL, McClain, with Thursday's victory, improves to 8-0-1 in SCOL with three league matches left on the schedule. The second-place team in the SCOL is Clinton-Massie at 6-3 in SCOL matches. MHS now has compiled 25 points in the league standings, while CM currently has 18.
"This was a good game for us," MHS coach Shawn Jackson said. "It was pouring rain, but it was a good way to get an SCOL win."
In the seven-goal win, the Tigers led 4-0 at halftime.
Senior midfielder Jarred White led the Tigers with three goals, followed by senior forward Luis Rivas with two goals. Also scoring one goal each were freshman forward Zack Harper and senior midfielder Sam Henry.
Jackson talked about what it is like for his team to be so close to their third consecutive league championship.
"It has been a long time coming," he said. "We've come a long way, and we've had great players and a great program to be able to have a chance to accomplish three league titles."
Overall, the Tigers stand at 10-0-1 on the season. Earlier this week, McClain won an SCOL match against the Hillsboro Indians, 4-2 in Greenfield.
